Urban greenery and the Textile Botanical Garden in the heart of Chieri
The Green Festival is a major widespread event that celebrates urban greenery every spring in Turin and numerous municipalities across the metropolitan area. The Municipality of Chieri, in the province of Turin, participates with a rich program of events that weaves together culture, environment, and textile tradition, contributing to a regional calendar that involves dozens of locations throughout the Piedmont region.
The 2026 edition revolves around the theme "Urban Symbiosis: Water and Roots", which focuses on the dialogue between natural elements and the built environment. In Chieri, this central theme translates into meetings, performances, readings, and workshops designed for all ages, from primary schools to adults, with a special focus on wetland biodiversity and the value of trees in the city.
The most anticipated moment is the opening of the Textile Botanical Garden, set in the 15th-century cloister of the former Santa Chiara convent, home to the Textile Museum. It is the first botanical garden of its kind in Piedmont and features two main sections: one dedicated to fiber plants (flax, cotton, hemp, nettle, broom) and the other, larger section, to dye plants (woad, persicaria, elderberry, indigo), from which colors for the textile industry have been extracted for centuries. The guided tours, within the "Green Unveiled" section, take visitors on a journey to discover nature "to be worn".
In addition to the Textile Museum, the festival enlivens numerous places in the city:
Closing the Chieri event is the roundtable "Nature and City: A Relationship to Cultivate", a discussion between experts, architects, and landscape designers on the future of urban greenery.
A city of art at the gates of Turin, Chieri boasts a centuries-old textile history that makes the Textile Museum and its Botanical Garden a unique gem in Piedmont. The Green Festival enhances this heritage by combining artisanal memory with environmental sensitivity, in a proposal that speaks to both Chieri residents and visitors arriving from the regional capital and the Turin metropolitan area.
The 2026 Green Festival in Chieri opened on the weekend of May 9-10 with the opening of the Textile Botanical Garden in the cloister of the former Santa Chiara convent, and continued until May 21 with a busy calendar of events spread throughout the city.
The theme "Urban Symbiosis: Water and Roots" guided animated readings in Piazza Pellico, workshops at PATCH Park curated by the Polytechnic University of Turin, theatrical performances on climate change, and the "Green Pages" exhibition at the Francone Civic Library. The event concluded with the roundtable "Nature and City: A Relationship to Cultivate".
May 9-10 – Opening of the Textile Botanical Garden and "Green Unveiled" guided tours (Saturday 14:00-18:00, Sunday 10:00-12:00).
