The feast of the soldier patron saint of Schiavi di Abruzzo

The Patronal Feast of Saint Maurice the Martyr is the most heartfelt religious and civil celebration in Schiavi di Abruzzo, a village in the upper Val di Sangro perched in the mountains on the border with Molise, in the province of Chieti and in the heart of southern Abruzzo. Saint Maurice, commander of the legendary Theban Legion and a martyr for his faith, is venerated as the community's protector. His liturgical feast day falls on September 22, the date around which the main festivities are concentrated.
The devotion to Saint Maurice in Schiavi di Abruzzo has a unique character, tied to the military nature of the saint, described in ancient prayers as the "invincible leader of the Theban army." For this reason, the feast has always taken on a solemn and almost "militarized" dimension: retired Alpini from local sections carry the martyr's relics in procession, escorting them with lit torches along the village streets. The mother church dedicated to the patron saint, built around the mid-16th century and expanded in the 19th century into three naves, preserves the memory of this tradition, which was enriched in 2022 by a mural dedicated to the saint along Via Cirillo.
The festival program unfolds around September 22 and includes the first solemn vespers, a sung mass, the procession with the statue and relics of the martyr, and, according to tradition, fireworks to close the festivities. Alongside the liturgical dimension is the community aspect: the feast is an occasion for the entire village to reunite, including families who have emigrated and return to the village for the event. In some years, the celebration has been presided over by bishops of the Diocese of Trivento, testifying to the importance attributed to the patron's cult.
The village is also known for its extraordinary Italic archaeological site, featuring two Samnite temples that make it one of the most evocative cultural destinations in the Abruzzo hinterland. Experiencing the Feast of Saint Maurice means discovering an authentic town, far from the major tourist circuits, where religious tradition, historical memory, and mountain landscapes intertwine in a single narrative of identity.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is recommended to check with the Municipality of Schiavi di Abruzzo or the parish as the September date approaches.
