The cycling granfondo starting from the Mugello Circuit, winding through hills, roads, and gravel paths.
The GranFondo del Mugello - The Milk Way is one of the most anticipated events in the Tuscan cycling calendar. It takes place in Scarperia e San Piero, in the heart of the Mugello region, province of Florence, and attracts over a thousand cyclists from across Italy every year. Organized by ASD Mugello Toscana Bike, the event is distinguished by a unique detail: the start takes place inside the Mugello International Circuit, with the green light signaling the beginning of the race.
The charm of The Milk Way lies in the variety of its routes, designed to accommodate cyclists of all levels and disciplines. Participants can choose from five routes that traverse the Mugello hills, passing through villages, scenic roads, and dirt tracks immersed in nature:
Along the road routes, there are two timed climbs on closed roads, reserved for those who want to test themselves against the clock, while the rest of the event maintains a non-competitive, cycle-touring spirit. E-bikes are permitted on the short road route and the classic gravel route.
After the ride, the finish in the evocative Piazza dei Vicari, dominated by the imposing Palazzo dei Vicari, provides a backdrop of great historical value in the village of Scarperia, famous for its cutlery craftsmanship. The Mugello, a land of hills, pastures, and ancient dairy traditions—from which the name "The Milk Way" is inspired—welcomes cyclists with its landscapes and hospitality.
The GranFondo del Mugello is more than just a race: it is a day of celebration that intertwines sport and gastronomy. Several refreshment stations are set up along the routes, while at the finish line, participants are welcomed by the traditional pasta party featuring the famous Mugello potato tortelli, a symbolic dish of local cuisine. The event is part of the main regional cycling circuits and the national UISP calendar, confirming its status as a benchmark for those who love cycling and Tuscany.
Open to both licensed athletes and enthusiasts, The Milk Way combines competition and conviviality: those who wish can challenge themselves on the timed climbs, while those who prefer can enjoy the Mugello landscape without the pressure of rankings. An opportunity to discover one of the most authentic corners of the Florentine Apennines from the saddle.
The 2026 edition, the eighth of the event, confirms the winning formula of The Milk Way. The start is set at the Mugello International Circuit, with the finish in the scenic Piazza dei Vicari in Scarperia. Five routes are offered: three on the road (approx. 45, 80, and 132 km) and two gravel (approx. 60 and 90 km), with two timed climbs on closed roads for competitors. Registration fees start from approximately 20-25 euros, with the option to purchase the technical Alè Cycling jersey; participation is capped at 1000 riders. At the finish line, a pasta party with Mugello potato tortelli awaits.
