Mountain biking takes center stage on Mount Amiata, amidst historic villages and tuff landscapes
The Gran Fondo Santa Fiora is one of the most anticipated mountain bike events in southern Tuscany. It takes place in Santa Fiora, a stunning village on Mount Amiata in the province of Grosseto, officially recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Every year in mid-June, hundreds of cycling enthusiasts gather in Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of the town, to tackle a spectacular route that connects the Amiata mountains to the most scenic landscapes of the inland Maremma.
The race offers three routes designed to accommodate athletes of all levels, from the most seasoned riders to cycle-tourists looking for a day in the saddle surrounded by nature:
The tracks start from the slopes of Mount Amiata and descend to the tuff landscapes of Sorano and Sovana, then climb back up along the panoramic ridges separating the Fiora and Albegna valleys. Some editions feature a timed section that adds a touch of competitive spirit to the ride.
The event is organized by ASD MTB Santa Fiora with the patronage of UISP and the municipalities crossed by the routes. The Gran Fondo is a stage of the Tuscan Cycle-Tourism Circuit and the prestigious Giro del Granducato di Toscana, two of the main regional events for off-road enthusiasts. The race is also dedicated to the memory of Renzo Verdi and is held as the Renzo Verdi Memorial.
The Gran Fondo Santa Fiora is also an opportunity to discover the local hospitality. Participants will find abundant refreshment stations along the route, as well as showers, massage services, and a final lunch at the finish line. The day thus transforms into a festival that combines sport, landscape, and conviviality in the unique setting of Mount Amiata.
Santa Fiora stands at an altitude of over 600 meters on the southern slopes of Mount Amiata, an ancient extinct volcano that dominates the province of Grosseto and southern Tuscany. The village is famous for its Peschiera, historic palaces, and Robbian terracotta, and serves as an ideal starting point for excursions and outdoor activities. The Gran Fondo enhances this natural and cultural heritage, bringing thousands of kilometers of enthusiasm to the saddle through chestnut forests, beech woods, and panoramic ridges.
The third edition of the Gran Fondo Santa Fiora was held on Sunday, June 14, 2026, organized by ASD MTB Santa Fiora under the patronage of UISP. The event, dedicated to the Renzo Verdi Memorial, featured the three classic routes: the Long route of approximately 115 km with 2,186 meters of elevation gain, the Medium of approximately 71 km, and the Short of approximately 35 km.
Among the year's novelties was an exciting timed section on a brand-new track. The start took place in Piazza Garibaldi: Long and Medium routes between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, Short route at 8:45 AM. Race pack distribution was held on Saturday, June 13, at the Youth Center. At the finish line, participants enjoyed abundant refreshments, showers, massage services, and a final lunch.
Santa Fiora can be reached by car from the Grosseto motorway exit (A12) by following signs for Mount Amiata, or via the Via Cassia (SS2) with a detour toward the mountain. The reference railway station is Grosseto, from which you can continue by bus or car.
The start is in Piazza Garibaldi, in the center of Santa Fiora. The Long and Medium routes typically start between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, and the Short route at 8:45 AM. Race pack distribution takes place the day before at the Santa Fiora Youth Center. Registration is done online via the Battistrada platform or by contacting the organization.
