The Procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows in the heart of Carini
In the town of Carini, in the province of Palermo, Good Friday is marked by one of the most evocative processions of the Sicilian Holy Week: 'A Sulità, the procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows. It is an event that spans centuries and still draws the entire population today, uniting faith, memory, and local identity in a single, long evening of reflection.
The term 'A Sulità comes from the Spanish word Soledad (solitude) and refers to the solitary and orderly parade of the chanting brothers in single file, according to a custom widespread in 17th-century Seville. Spanish rule left this imprint on the rites of the Passion throughout Sicily, and Carini preserves one of its most authentic expressions.
The two statues, the Dead Christ laid in the Urn and Our Lady of Sorrows, are kept in the Church of the SS. Rosario. From here, the brothers of the Congregation of the Via Crucis, known as the 'dei 33', carry them in procession to the Mother Church, where the solemn parade begins. According to tradition, the statues are decorated by the unmarried girls of the town, called virgìneddi, who tend to the flowers and ornaments with devotion.
The statues of the Crucifix, the Ecce Homo, the Dead Christ, and Our Lady of Sorrows start from different points in the town to meet near the Old Mother Church, where the actual procession begins. The start is announced by a drum roll so vigorous that it can be heard in every corner of the town, a signal that calls the people of Carini out into the streets. The procession winds slowly through the streets of the historic center, illuminated by the light of candles, in a silence charged with emotion.
'A Sulità is not a show for tourists, but a community rite rooted in the popular devotion of Carini. For those visiting Sicily during Holy Week, witnessing it means entering the heart of a tradition that the Province of Palermo preserves with pride, where the sacred and the popular intertwine in one of the most intense chapters of the Sicilian religious calendar.
The 2026 edition of 'A Sulità took place on Good Friday, April 3. As per tradition, the gathering began at 6:00 PM at the Church of the SS. Rosario, from where the brothers of the Congregation of the Via Crucis carried the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows towards the Mother Church. At 9:00 PM, the solemn procession began along the streets of Carini, announced by the characteristic drum roll.
The procession takes place every year on Good Friday, in the evening. The gathering at the Church of the SS. Rosario is scheduled for around 6:00 PM; the solemn procession leaves the Mother Church around 9:00 PM.
