Good Friday Historical Re-enactment (Via Crucis)

A tradition rooted in the heart of Cerveteri

The Good Friday Historical Re-enactment, also known as the Via Crucis of Cerveteri, is one of the most iconic events of Holy Week in the municipality of Cerveteri, in the province of Rome, Lazio. Established in the late 1960s by the Santa Maria Maggiore Parish, the event has spanned over half a century, becoming a shared heritage for the entire local community.

The sacred representation

Every year, on the evening of Good Friday, the historic center of the village transforms into a vast open-air stage. Over one hundred actors in meticulously detailed period costumes bring the Passion of Christ to life: from the betrayal of Judas to the trial before Pontius Pilate, from the sentencing to the ascent to Calvary, and finally the crucifixion on Mount Golgotha. The performance combines acting, voice-over narration, lighting effects, and music in an itinerant journey of great emotional intensity.

The route

The procession begins on the steps of Piazza Aldo Moro and winds through the alleys and streets of the town, accompanied by chariots and horses that recreate the atmosphere of Jerusalem at the time. The audience follows the procession along the entire route, participating in a collective experience that blends faith, memory, and popular theater.

Organization

The event is managed by the Good Friday Committee, coordinated by Pietro Longatti along with his sons Francesco and Giovanni, with the support and patronage of the Department of Culture and the Department of Districts of the Municipality of Cerveteri. The work of dozens of volunteers—including actors, tailors, technicians, and collaborators—makes this large-scale production possible every year.

The Via Crucis of Cerveteri attracts a large audience every year, including locals, the faithful, and tourists drawn by the charm of the village. The re-enactment represents a moment of strong social cohesion and is one of the most anticipated spiritual and cultural events of the spring in Cerveteri, successfully combining the religious dimension of Holy Week with the town's theatrical and popular spirit.
