Medieval history and flavors of the Asti Monferrato hills
Every spring, the village of Montechiaro d'Asti, in the province of Asti, becomes part of the grand Golosaria Monferrato circuit, a food, wine, and cultural event involving over forty towns across the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. Conceived by Paolo Massobrio, Golosaria promotes the Monferrato hills—a wine-growing landscape declared a UNESCO World Heritage site—through itineraries that weave together wineries, local products, art, and history.
Montechiaro d'Asti welcomes visitors with a stroll through its historic center, founded in 1200, among ancient workshops and corners that tell centuries of village life. The town is famous for its Codex Montechiarensis, a precious historical document illustrated directly at the Town Hall by the mayor and local authorities. The surrounding hills also house the evocative Romanesque parish churches of Piesenzana and San Nazario, perfect destinations for walks blending nature and art.
The delicious heart of the festival lies in the traditional lunches served in local restaurants and the courtyard of the Pro Loco of Montechiaro d'Asti, the event's organizer: enjoy a mixed platter of cold cuts and cheeses, agnolotti with butter and sage, and bunet, the historic Piedmontese cocoa dessert. Don't miss the visits to the Pro Loco wineries to taste the wines of the Monferrato hills.
During the weekend, the village offers art exhibitions, creative workshops for all ages curated by the Bottega del Pittore, and a walk to the educational truffle ground, a symbol of the territory's deep-rooted truffle heritage. The festival traditionally closes with the tamburello tournament, an ancient ball game that sees teams from Montechiaro and Montemagno compete at the local sferisterio.
Golosaria in Montechiaro d'Asti is the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Monferrato, far from the main tourist flows: a village where medieval history, Romanesque art, and great Piedmontese cuisine meet in a warm, genuine atmosphere, brought to life by the passion of the Pro Loco and its volunteers.
The 2026 edition of Golosaria Monferrato celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the event with an extraordinary edition involving over forty towns in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, on the theme "Taste, Home, Hills". Montechiaro d'Asti is included in Itinerary 7, together with Piea and Piovà Massaia. The village, organized by the Pro Loco, offers two days full of walks, culture, art, and gastronomy in the hills of the Asti Monferrato.
Montechiaro d'Asti can be reached by car via the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway (Asti Est exit), continuing along the hilly roads of the Monferrato. The nearest train station is in Asti, on the Turin-Genoa line, from where you can continue by car or local bus.
The village has parking areas near the historic center; on festival days, arriving early is recommended to secure a spot.
Admission to the event and the walks is generally free. Traditional lunches at the Pro Loco and local restaurants are paid; reservations are recommended for menus served in the Pro Loco courtyard.
