About Nativity Scenes in Frinco – Between Light and Shadow

In Frinco, a small village in the Lower Asti Monferrato, the "Between Light and Shadow" trail brings Christmas to life as part of the Gold Incense Myrrh – Nativity Scenes in Monferrato festival. Traditional, modern, and stylized nativity scenes, often crafted from recycled materials, appear along the historic streets and in front of churches and homes. This free itinerary echoes the message of Saint Francis and the spiritual essence of Christmas in the small villages of the Asti hills.

The widespread nativity scene of Frinco in the heart of Monferrato

Every Christmas, the village of Frinco, located in the Province of Asti in the heart of the Lower Asti Monferrato (Piedmont), transforms into a vast open-air nativity scene. The Frinco trail, titled "Between Light and Shadow", is part of the Gold Incense Myrrh – Nativity Scenes in Monferrato festival, a Christmas itinerary that involves eight municipalities in the Asti hills each year: in addition to Frinco, these include Aramengo, Castagnole delle Lanze, Castagnole Monferrato, Castell'Alfero, Cocconato, Monale, and San Damiano.

A journey through faith, art, and recycling

In Frinco, the nativity scenes are not gathered in one place but are scattered along the streets of the historic center: you will find them in front of churches, at the entrances to homes, and in the most charming corners of the village. The uniqueness of the trail lies in the materials used: many nativity scenes are created from recovered and recycled materials, a sign of a humble creativity that recalls the message of Saint Francis — living faith and peace in simplicity. Alongside traditional scenes, there are modern and stylized representations, the result of the patient work of the parish, the Pro Loco, and the local residents.

Why it is worth visiting

The "Between Light and Shadow" trail is an ideal stop for those who want to discover the authentic Christmas of Piedmontese villages, far from mass tourism. The visit is free and can easily be combined with other itineraries of the festival in neighboring towns: in just a few kilometers, you can travel through hills, ancient churches, and decorated courtyards, in an experience that combines walking, folk art, and religious tradition. The event is coordinated by the Cassa di Risparmio di Asti Foundation and the Ecomuseum of Lower Asti Monferrato, with the patronage of the Province of Asti and the support of local entities.

How the visit works

The nativity scenes of Frinco can be visited during the Christmas period, with openings on weekends and public holidays. Booking is recommended for group visits. The village is easily accessible by car from Asti and Monferrato and serves as a perfect starting point for a tour of the widespread nativity scenes across the hills of the Lower Asti Monferrato.
