Handmade gnocchi for Saint Roch, on Lake Como
In Pognana Lario, a small municipality overlooking the Como branch of Lake Como (province of Como), August 16th celebrates the patron saint Saint Roch with a beloved gastronomic festival: the Gnocchi and Salamella Festival.
The event, which has its roots in 1974, takes place in the square adjacent to the 14th-century church of San Rocco. The absolute stars are the handmade gnocchi: from morning to evening, over fifty volunteers from the Pro Loco boil potatoes, mash them, knead them with flour, and cook the gnocchi, seasoned and served to the public.
Alongside the gnocchi, you can enjoy tasty grilled salamelle. The day begins with a mass in honor of Saint Roch and continues with the festival from noon, while in the evening the celebration continues with an orchestra and dancing in the square. A mid-August event that combines devotion, culinary tradition, and conviviality, in the suggestive setting of the lake.
