The ancient 1572 wine press is back to crushing grapes on the shores of Lake Como
The Palanzo Wine Press Festival takes place in the charming hamlet of Palanzo, part of the municipality of Faggeto Lario, on the shores of Lake Como, in the province of Como. The absolute protagonist is the ancient lever wine press, a historical monument that bears the date 1572 engraved on its supporting stone: it measures over 12 meters in length and 3 in circumference, with the wooden screw that operates it being about 6 meters high. It is one of the largest and oldest wine presses preserved in Italy.
During the festival, the ancient wine press is put back into operation: visitors can witness the grape crushing and the production of must according to ancient tradition, in a demonstration that brings back to life the gestures and knowledge of farmers from centuries ago. It is a rare experience, making this festival a unique event in the Larian festival scene.
The streets of Palanzo come alive with food stalls offering typical Larian dishes: polenta, cured meats, local cheeses, artisanal desserts, and the new wine freshly tapped from the press. There is also live music, craft markets, and entertainment for children. The event, established in 1975, is organized by the Association Friends of the Palanzo Wine Press with the support of the Larian Triangle region, and represents an authentic way to experience autumn on Lake Como.
