A week of music, heritage, and local pride on the Island of Elba honoring the father of Italian operetta
In 2026, the Island of Elba celebrates one of its most illustrious sons: Maestro Giuseppe Pietri, born on May 6, 1886, in Sant'Ilario, a hamlet of Campo nell'Elba, and who passed away in Milan on August 11, 1946. To mark the 140th anniversary of his birth and the 80th of his death, the municipalities of Portoferraio and Campo nell'Elba (Province of Livorno, Tuscany) have joined forces for a week of celebrations titled "Melodies, Memory, and Territory".
Trained at the Milan Conservatory, Pietri is considered one of the founding fathers and the greatest exponent of the "Italian way" to operetta. His genius lay in replacing the aristocratic settings typical of the Central European genre with stories and characters from everyday Italian life. His most famous operettas include Addio giovinezza! (1915), L'acqua cheta (1920), and the opera Maristella (1934), featuring the tenor romance Io conosco un giardino. He also composed "Terra d'Arezzo," the anthem of the Giostra del Saracino.
The event is not a single concert, but a journey across the island that touches the places central to the composer's life. It opens in Marina di Campo with a historical pageant featuring the musicians and flag-wavers of Arezzo, continues with an official inauguration in Piazza Cavour in Portoferraio and the opening of a dedicated exhibition, includes a tribute at the Maestro's tomb in Sant'Ilario and a biographical book presentation, and culminates in the grand operetta gala.
The beating heart of the celebrations is the Operetta Grand Gala at the Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" in Portoferraio, an evening that brings together the local musical community: the "Giuseppe Pietri" Philharmonic of Portoferraio, the "San Gaetano" Schola Cantorum, the "Coro per caso" choir, and soloists. It is a rare opportunity to hear the Maestro's most beloved works performed live in an intimate setting deeply connected to his memory.
More than just a tourist event, the Giuseppe Pietri Celebrations are an act of love by a community for its own cultural identity. For those visiting Elba in the spring, they offer a unique chance to discover a often-overlooked Italian musical heritage, all while immersed in the authentic atmosphere of Portoferraio and the surrounding Elban villages.
Promoted by the municipalities of Portoferraio and Campo nell'Elba, the 2026 edition intertwined music, history, and local heritage throughout the week. From the opening in Marina di Campo with the Musicians and Flag-wavers of Arezzo, to the official inauguration in Piazza Cavour, the tribute at the Maestro's tomb in Sant'Ilario, and the presentation of the biography, every moment helped bring the figure of the Elban composer back to the center stage. The Operetta Grand Gala at the Teatro dei Vigilanti marked the success of the event with a full house.
Portoferraio is the main port of the Island of Elba, accessible by ferry from Piombino Marittima (about a 1-hour crossing). Piombino is well-connected by train and car to the Tuscan mainland. The Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" is located in the historic center of Portoferraio.

Events take place across Portoferraio, Marina di Campo, and Sant'Ilario: it is advisable to plan your travel between locations in advance. The final Grand Gala typically sells out, so early booking is highly recommended.
