A parade of horses and riders through the alleys of the medieval village in the Sicani Mountains

The Giuliana Equestrian Parade is an event dedicated to the world of horses, held in the heart of the medieval village of Giuliana, a small municipality of just over two thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of over 700 meters in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Palermo, Sicily. The event, which reached its third edition in the spring of 2025, gathers horses, riders, amazons, and carriages that parade along the stone streets of the historic center.
The parade is part of a lively tradition widespread in the Palermo hinterland, where numerous towns—from Vicari to Alia and the villages of the Madonie—organize equestrian parades that showcase the care of harnesses, the beauty of the animals, and the skill of the riders. In Giuliana, horses dressed for the occasion traverse the alleys and gather in the town squares, where they are presented to the public amidst applause and photographs.
What makes the event unique is the backdrop: Giuliana is a "naturally fortified" village on a cliff, dominated by the Frederick II Castle, a jewel of Swabian architecture with its characteristic pentagonal tower. The cobbled streets, centuries-old churches, and views over the Sosio valley frame the passage of the horses, creating striking imagery.
Beyond the parade itself, the day is a festive occasion for the entire Giuliana community, featuring stands, conviviality, and the meeting of equestrian groups from various parts of Sicily. The event helps promote the territory and attract visitors to one of the most fascinating villages in the Sicani Mountains.
The Equestrian Parade is traditionally held in the spring, during the month of April. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: we recommend following the social media channels of the organizers and the Municipality of Giuliana to learn about the program as soon as it is made public.
No official dates have been released yet for the 2026 edition of the Giuliana Equestrian Parade. Based on previous editions, the parade of horses, amazons, and carriages in the historic center of the village in the province of Palermo takes place in April. The detailed program will be published by the organizers and the Municipality of Giuliana: we invite you to follow the official channels to learn about the date, times, and route of the parade as soon as they are announced.
Giuliana can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit for the Sicani Mountains area) or via the network of state and provincial roads in the Palermo hinterland. The nearest airport is Palermo "Falcone-Borsellino".
The parade traverses the historic center of Giuliana, at the foot of the Frederick II Castle. We recommend leaving your car in the parking lots at the entrance to the town and continuing on foot along the alleys.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled and uphill streets. The event is outdoors: please consider the spring weather conditions of the Sicani Mountains.
