The historic Lake Orta cycling race, running since 1963
The Giro della Castellania is one of the most deep-rooted road cycling races in the Cusio area. First held in 1963, it takes place every spring, starting from the lakeside of Pettenasco, in the Municipality of Orta San Giulio, in the Province of Novara (Piedmont). The race takes its name from the Castellania, the ancient administrative body that united the civil communities of the Cusio in past centuries, and over the years it has become a highly anticipated event for cycling enthusiasts across the region.
The course follows a picturesque loop that skirts the entire Lake Orta, passing through the villages of Pettenasco, Omegna, Nonio, Cesara, San Maurizio d'Opaglio, Pogno, Gozzano, and Orta San Giulio, with views constantly focused on the famous Isola di San Giulio, one of the most beloved jewels of the Cusio. The circuit, characterized by constant undulations, is repeated several times and culminates in a challenging uphill finish near Crabbia-Pratolungo, making the race both selective and spectacular.
Historically reserved for the Junior men's category, the event has seen many names destined to become protagonists of national cycling at the starting line. The race is included in the Italian Cycling Federation calendar and is organized with the collaboration of local sports clubs, which ensure the safety of the route and the hospitality of athletes and their teams every year.
Alongside the classic men's event, the race has opened up to female participation with the introduction of an Open women's race, which has brought dozens of cyclists from all over Italy to Lake Orta. This growth confirms the vitality of an event capable of renewing itself while preserving over sixty years of history.
More than just a competition, the Giro della Castellania is a festive occasion for Orta San Giulio and the surrounding lakeside towns: the passage of the riders brings the streets, squares, and lakefronts to life, while the public follows the race along the lake loop. The landscape of the Cusio, with its historic villages and the silhouette of the Isola di San Giulio, makes this race an event that combines sport, tradition, and the beauty of Piedmont.
The 2026 edition of the Giro della Castellania was a memorable day on the shores of Lake Orta. The major novelty was the debut of the first Open women's race: 139 athletes started at 9:45 AM from Pettenasco, with the victory going to Chantal Pegolo (Isolmant Premac Vittoria) ahead of Chiara Reghini and Giulia Giuliani. Vivienne Cassata won the title of Piedmontese Regional Champion.
In the afternoon, at 1:00 PM, the 62nd Junior men's race took place, won by Luca Gugnino (UC Piasco) ahead of Luca Frontini and Giulio Franceschini, along the scenic lake loop with an uphill finish towards Pratolungo.
