A race in the heart of the Borromean Islands

The Gira in gir par l'isula pescadur is a non-competitive fun run that transforms the Isola dei Pescatori in Stresa into a unique stage for running enthusiasts every summer. The name, in the Piedmontese dialect, literally means "run around the fishermen's island" and perfectly captures the spirit of the event: a repeated loop around and through the smallest and most authentic of the Borromean Islands, in the Municipality of Stresa, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont).

A unique route on Lake Maggiore

The race covers a distance of approximately 6 km, achieved by completing several counter-clockwise laps of the island. The route has the characteristics of a true urban trail: gravel, cobblestones, dirt paths, constant changes in direction, and short elevation changes through the narrow alleys and fishermen's houses. Running here means traversing a village inhabited all year round, with the church, fishing nets drying in the sun, and the lake water just a few steps away: an experience that goes far beyond simple athletic performance.

How the evening unfolds

The meeting point is at the Lido di Carciano in Stresa, from where participants reach Isola dei Pescatori by motorboat. Once all competitors have landed, the mini-race for children begins, followed by the main race, which takes place at sunset and offers spectacular views of Lake Maggiore illuminated by the last light of the day.

Sport, solidarity, and conviviality

At the end of the race, a pasta party is held on the island, organized by the Pro Loco and local restaurants—the perfect opportunity to share the effort and beauty of the evening. The event also has a strong charitable focus: part of the proceeds is donated to the CIPS association, which is dedicated to the maintenance and cleaning of local trails.

A beloved Verbano tradition

Now in its more mature editions, the Gira in gir par l'isula pescadur has become a classic of the Stresa summer, successfully blending sport with tourism and local tradition. It is open to runners of all levels, casual joggers, and families, set against one of the most famous landscapes in Italy.
