The school music festival in the heart of Giovinazzo
Giovinazzo in Musica is the festival that, every year in May, transforms the ancient village of Giovinazzo, on the Adriatic coast of the Metropolitan City of Bari, into a grand stage dedicated to school music. Promoted by the Moving Music Cultural Association, the event showcases the musical departments of Italian schools and offers young people a concrete opportunity to perform in front of an audience, in a professional yet welcoming setting.
For five days, the city welcomes around a thousand students from schools within the Metropolitan City and from institutes in other regions of the peninsula. The stage features orchestras, choirs, bands, ensembles, and soloists from schools of all levels, from the youngest children to high school students. The festival is designed as a moment for meeting and growth rather than a simple competition: students share different repertoires, experiences, and musical languages.
The closing ceremony is held in the Sala San Felice, in the heart of the city's historic center, a choice that highlights the deep bond between the event and the local area. Various performances bring the spaces of the ancient village to life, creating a picturesque setting just a few steps from the port and the cathedral.
One of the hallmarks of Giovinazzo in Musica is the close collaboration with local high schools as part of the Cross-Curricular Skills and Orientation Paths (PCTO): participating schools include the ITET "Salvemini", the Liceo "Fornari", and the Liceo "Vespucci-Spinelli". Older students assist with the organization and guide visiting school groups to discover the beauties of Giovinazzo, thus combining music with an appreciation of local history and heritage. The Touring Juvenatium ODV association also collaborates on logistics.
The festival does not limit itself to tradition: recent editions have introduced awards and thematic sections of great relevance, such as the prize dedicated to the values of peace and an experimental section on the relationship between music and artificial intelligence, in line with new ministerial guidelines. It is a way to stimulate the curiosity of young musicians and project the event toward the languages of tomorrow.
Giovinazzo in Musica is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Giovinazzo, the Metropolitan City of Bari, and the Apulia Region, and has become a fixed appointment in the Apulian spring for the world of education.
From May 18 to 22, 2026, Giovinazzo hosted the fourth edition of the festival, promoted by the Moving Music Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Giovinazzo, the Metropolitan City of Bari, and the Apulia Region. Around a thousand students from schools in the Metropolitan City and other regions of the peninsula took to the stage with orchestras, choirs, bands, ensembles, and soloists.
Among the year's novelties were the establishment of the "World Peace" prize and the launch of a section dedicated to "Music and Artificial Intelligence", in line with new ministerial guidelines. During the week, an award was also presented in memory of Prof. Carmela Cristofaro. The closing ceremony was held in the Sala San Felice, in the heart of the historic center.

Giovinazzo is located on the Adriatic coast about 20 km northwest of Bari. It is accessible by train via regional lines (Giovinazzo station) or by car via the SS16 Adriatica road. The nearest airport is Bari Karol Wojtyla, about 30 km away.
Performances and the closing ceremony take place in the historic center, with the Sala San Felice as the main reference point.
As this is a school festival open to the public, it is recommended to check access procedures for individual events with the Moving Music Association or the Municipality of Giovinazzo.
The festival is usually held in the second half of May.
