The community-focused Carnival of Giovinazzo featuring piñatas, street performers, and the traditional Carnival Funeral
The Giovinazzo Carnival is the annual event that brings color, masks, and joy to the squares of Giovinazzo, a charming town on the Adriatic coast north of Bari, in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. Created to restore a local, community-driven Carnival experience in public spaces, the event is organized by the Xenia association, in collaboration with Ramè and under the patronage of the Municipality of Giovinazzo.
The Giovinazzo Carnival spans several days, enlivening the city's iconic landmarks: the Villa Comunale, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza Garibaldi, and other areas of the historic center. Rather than a parade of massive floats, this is a community-sized celebration featuring games, entertainment, and live performances specifically designed for children.
The event concludes with the Carnival Funeral, a ritual that blends irony with popular memory: a "funeral" procession accompanies the Carnival effigy to its final burning, celebrating the end of the revelry and the beginning of Lent. It is the most iconic moment of the festival, drawing dozens of families with children to the square.
The Giovinazzo Carnival was born with the clear goal of de-seasonalizing local events and promoting folk traditions, engaging families, children, and citizens of all ages. Free and spread across public spaces, it represents a key highlight of Giovinazzo's winter calendar and an opportunity to experience the historic center and the Villa Comunale in a festive atmosphere.
The fourth edition of the Giovinazzo Carnival opened on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in the Villa Comunale: at 10:30 AM, the traditional piñata breaking took place, followed at 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM by juggling and comedy magic shows by street performer Lorenzo Torres.
The grand finale was scheduled for Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday) in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele with the Carnival Funeral, entertainment and games by Ramè, a procession through the historic center, and the final bonfire. Due to bad weather, the closing celebration was postponed to February 22, 2026, when dozens of families witnessed the burning of the effigy in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
The events take place in the center of Giovinazzo (BA), Apulia: Villa Comunale, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza Garibaldi, and other areas of the historic center.
Giovinazzo can be reached by car via the SS16 Adriatica road and the A14 motorway (Bitonto-Giovinazzo exit). The train station is served by the Bari-Barletta line; it is approximately 20 km north of Bari.
All Giovinazzo Carnival events are free to attend. The program and schedule are published by the Xenia association and the Municipality of Giovinazzo. In case of bad weather, some events may be postponed.
