The youth version of the Santo Stefano tree ritual, part of the Baiano Christmas tradition

In Baiano, a town of just over 4,700 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, nestled at the foot of the Partenio mountains on the edge of Irpinia, Christmas has for centuries been synonymous with the Maio ritual: the tallest and straightest tree from the Arciano woods is cut on the morning of December 25th and raised in front of the church of Santo Stefano as an offering to the patron saint. Alongside this ancient rite, a youth-led version has emerged, the Giovane Maio, promoted by the Baiano Youth Forum: a scaled-down reproduction of the Maio, carried in a procession by the town's young people in the days before Christmas.
The heart of the event is the parade. A smaller tree is carried along the main streets of Baiano by the youth, who repeat the gestures, songs, and movements just as they are passed down in the "great" Maio. The procession ends in the square, where the day continues with songs, dances, and tastings of typical local products. It is a direct and engaging way to pass on to new generations an intangible heritage that in Baiano is handed down from family to family, from the maiolari who cut and transport the tree to those who, by hereditary right, climb to the top to release the ropes.
The event is held during the pre-Christmas period, as part of the "Baiano Christmas" calendar. The Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino indicates December 22nd and 23rd, while the AvellinoToday events calendar has occasionally noted December 12th for some editions: the exact date, as with many initiatives promoted by the Youth Forum, is announced year by year on the association's and the Municipality's social media channels. Visitors from out of town should check the date shortly before traveling.
The Giovane Maio is not an isolated event: it is a piece of a month-long festive cycle that involves the entire community, making Baiano one of the most interesting places in Campania for those seeking authentic folk traditions.
The Giovane Maio is the most accessible gateway to this ritual universe: shorter, lighter, and more suitable for those traveling with children compared to the long day of December 25th. Visitors will find a town in celebration, young people singing in the Baiano dialect, and stalls featuring local products, starting with the hazelnut, a historic crop of the area, and traditional Campanian Christmas sweets. This is not a re-enactment staged for tourists: it is the community telling its own story, and that is its greatest quality.
The Municipality of Baiano is located about twenty kilometers from Avellino and just over thirty from Naples, in an agricultural basin surrounded by the Partenio mountains. It is the terminus of the historic railway connecting it to the Campanian capital, a detail that has made the town a hub of exchange between Irpinia and the Naples area since the 19th century. Those staying a few extra hours can combine the festival with a visit to Avella, with its Roman amphitheater and monumental tombs, or a walk in the Partenio Regional Park.
At the moment, the official dates for the Giovane Maio 2026 in Baiano have not been published. The festival is traditionally placed in the pre-Christmas period, between mid and late December, and is part of the long Baiano Christmas cycle that culminates on December 25th with the raising of the Maio in front of the church of Santo Stefano.
Those wishing to participate can follow the updates from the Baiano Youth Forum, which organizes the event, and the communications from the Municipality of Baiano, in the province of Avellino. As usual, the program includes the youth procession with the scaled-down Maio along the town streets and the conclusion in the square with songs, dances, and tastings of typical Irpinian products.
Baiano is located 22 km from Avellino and about 35 km from Naples. By car, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Baiano. By train, the town is the terminus of the line connecting it to Naples, a convenient solution for those arriving from the capital who want to avoid parking in the center during the holidays.
The procession crosses the main streets of the center of Baiano and ends in the town square, a short distance from the church of Santo Stefano, the heart of all Baiano Christmas celebrations.
This is a public square event: participation in the procession and festivities is free. Some tastings may require a small contribution, communicated by the organizers on site.
Dates and programs are shared on the social media channels of the Baiano Youth Forum and through the Municipality of Baiano, in Piazza Francesco Napolitano.
You will be walking outdoors in the middle of winter: comfortable shoes and warm clothing are essential. Those who want to experience the full cycle can stay until December 25th and 26th, when the raising of the Maio and the procession of Santo Stefano take place.
