About Giocondi Nativity

Every Christmas, the Borgo Sant'Antonio in Sant'Anastasia turns into an open-air theater for the Giocondi Living Nativity. Established in 1981 and managed by the Associazione Jocundi under the artistic direction of Luigi De Simone, the event features over a hundred performers in period costumes. They bring the Nativity and scenes of daily life to life, complete with artisan workshops, ancient crafts, and moments of reflection on current events. It is a hallmark tradition of the Vesuvius area, in the province of Naples, renewed annually on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

One of the most anticipated living nativity scenes in the Vesuvius area

In the heart of the Municipality of Sant'Anastasia, in the province of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, the Giocondi Living Nativity has been one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in Campania for over forty years. Promoted by the Associazione Jocundi, the event uses the picturesque Borgo Sant'Antonio as its stage, transforming it into an open-air theater where the sacred meets history and the present.

A tradition born in 1981

The Giocondi Nativity was founded in 1981, in the aftermath of the November 23, 1980 earthquake, by Luigi De Simone, a lifelong resident of Sant'Anastasia. He gathered a group of young people to form the «Dei Giocondi» theater company. The name refers to the giocondi, the joyful followers of Saint Francis of Assisi, who made praising God and human fraternity their way of life. Since then, the performance has never stopped, growing year after year to become a benchmark for many other towns in the province of Naples.

Sant'Anastasia is also one of the few places in Italy where the living nativity takes place on Christmas Eve night, much like in Greccio, where Saint Francis created the first Nativity representation eight centuries ago.

Two performances, two different perspectives

In recent years, the event has split into two distinct sessions, each with its own significance:

  • Christmas Eve night, in Piazza Sant'Antonio, featuring a route focused on biblical scenes: Mary's anticipation, the journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, and the meeting with the Magi.
  • Boxing Day (December 26), throughout the entire Borgo Sant'Antonio, featuring a much broader route that combines the sacred narrative with daily life of the past: trades, workshops, arts, and social interactions, culminating in a scene dedicated to reflecting on current issues.

A hundred performers and the village backdrop

The story is brought to life by over one hundred performers in period costumes—actors, artists, and local citizens of all ages—performing in both static and moving scenes inspired by the 18th-century Neapolitan nativity tradition. Artisan workshops, ancient crafts, domestic scenes, and original artifacts create an authentic and immersive atmosphere, where the visitor is not a passive spectator but walks through the village alongside the characters.

A collective ritual for the community

More than just a show, the Giocondi Living Nativity is a collective act of memory, faith, and identity. Its realization involves the collaboration of the Associazione Jocundi, the Franciscan friars of the Sant'Antonio parish, the Municipality of Sant'Anastasia, the local police, civil protection, and law enforcement. Every year, the event attracts visitors from neighboring Vesuvius towns and across Campania, involving different generations of the same family: it is not uncommon for those who played a character as a child to see their own children on stage years later.

The artistic direction has always been entrusted to Luigi De Simone, who summarizes the spirit of the initiative: «Once again, devotion, folklore, art, and socialization. This is the Giocondi Nativity, which has been going on for forty-five years, involving generations to come».

Giocondi Nativity — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Giocondi Living Nativity is expected as usual during the Christmas season in the Borgo Sant'Antonio of Sant'Anastasia. As of the writing of this entry, the organizers have not yet released official dates, times, or programs: information will be updated as soon as the Associazione Jocundi announces the calendar for the new edition.

The Giocondi Living Nativity returns in December 2026 to the Borgo Sant'Antonio in Sant'Anastasia, in the province of Naples, following the 45th edition held in 2025.

At the moment, no official dates or programs for the new edition have been announced. In recent years, the event has been divided into two performances, on Christmas Eve night in Piazza Sant'Antonio and on Boxing Day throughout the village, but confirmation rests with the organizers.

To stay updated, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Associazione Jocundi del Presepe Vivente dei Giocondi and the communications from the Municipality of Sant'Anastasia, which includes the nativity scene in its official Christmas festivities program every year.

Practical information — Giocondi Nativity

How to get there

Sant'Anastasia is located in the Vesuvius area, just a few kilometers from Naples. By train, it is served by the Sant'Anastasia station on the EAV Circumvesuviana line (Naples–Nola–Baiano). By car, it can be reached via the SS 268 del Vesuvio; on the evenings of the event, it is advisable to park in areas outside the center and walk toward the Borgo Sant'Antonio.

Tips for your visit

The route takes place outdoors along the village alleys: we recommend wearing appropriate winter clothing and comfortable shoes. The Christmas Eve performance is held late at night, while the Boxing Day one is in the late afternoon; it is best to arrive early to see all the scenes without the crowds.
