About Gigli Festival of Crispano

The Gigli Festival of Crispano is one of the oldest gigli traditions in Campania, ranking third in seniority after Nola and Barra. Established in 1867 to honor Our Lady of Good Counsel, every June it brings the streets of this town in the province of Naples to life with the dance of wooden obelisks, carried on shoulders by the 'paranze' to the rhythm of music. It is a blend of faith, folklore, and local pride that draws thousands of spectators.

The Gigli Festival of Crispano

Every year in June, the town of Crispano, in the province of Naples, becomes the beating heart of one of Campania's most deeply felt popular traditions: the Gigli Festival. For several days, the town center hosts the dance of the wooden obelisks—towering, intricately decorated festival structures carried on the shoulders of dozens of 'cullatori' (bearers) to the driving rhythm of musical bands known as 'paranze'. It is a ritual that unites faith, folklore, and civic pride, attracting thousands of people.

A tradition born in 1867

The devotion to the Gigli arrived in Crispano in the mid-19th century, thanks to merchants from Nola who frequented the town and were moved by the enthusiasm with which the local population honored Our Lady of Good Counsel. Thus, in June 1867, the first 'giglio' was built by the historic Vecchione art workshop. Since then, the festival has never stopped, becoming the third oldest in the Campanian gigli tradition after those of Nola and Barra.

The dance of the Gigli

The highlight is the Sunday of the festival, when the obelisks dance through the streets of Crispano amidst the crowds. Each 'giglio' represents a local committee and is entrusted to a 'paranza', the group of bearers who, led by a captain, lift and dance the structure to the band's music. The preceding weeks are marked by ritual events such as the 'alzata delle borde' (raising of the poles) and the parade of the 'gigli spogliati' (unadorned gigli), highly anticipated milestones for enthusiasts.

Committees and paranze

The festival is fueled by the friendly rivalry between local committees. Recent editions have featured the 'A Storia committee, the 'O Suonne e na Vita committee, and the Azzurri di Crispano, each supported by their own 'paranza'. The competition between teams, the attention to detail in the decorations, and the skill of the bearers are integral parts of the event's charm.

Faith, music, and community

Beyond its spectacular nature, the Gigli Festival retains a profound religious significance linked to the cult of Our Lady of Good Counsel and the popular devotion typical of the Campanian territory. Music, illuminations, prayer, and entertainment fill the festival days, creating an atmosphere that involves entire families and multiple generations.

The festival in Crispano today

Supported by the Crispano Municipal Administration and local committees, the event attracts visitors every year from neighboring towns in the area north of Naples. In recent years, particular attention has been paid to safety and crowd management to ensure the tradition can take place in a serene environment.

Gigli Festival of Crispano — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Gigli Festival of Crispano featured three competing committees—'A Storia, 'O Suonne e na Vita, and the Azzurri di Crispano—with the dance of the obelisks culminating on Sunday, June 14. A month of events including the raising of the poles, the unadorned gigli parades, and musical evenings in honor of Our Lady of Good Counsel, with a strong commitment from the municipal administration regarding safety.

The 2026 Gigli Festival of Crispano confirmed the vitality of a tradition rooted in 1867. Three committees were the protagonists, each with its own 'giglio' and 'paranza': 'A Storia, 'O Suonne e na Vita, and the Azzurri di Crispano. After weeks of preparation marked by the raising of the poles and the parades of the unadorned gigli, the obelisks danced through the town streets on Sunday, June 14, in honor of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
