Allegorical floats, masquerades, and Sicilian tradition in the heart of the city
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Gela Carnival is one of the most beloved events in the Gela area, located in the heart of the Caltanissetta province in Sicily. Many enthusiasts consider it one of the most beautiful on the island: a festival of color, joy, and creativity that transforms the city's main street into a grand open-air stage every winter.
The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical floats, masterfully crafted by local artisans showcasing their artistic skills. The parade consists of at least a dozen floats winding through the city streets: it traditionally kicks off from Viale Indipendenza, at the corner of Via Europa in the Caposoprano district, crossing the entire city center. Alongside the floats, masked groups parade, featuring students from all grade levels, a Brazilian group, historical pageants, clowns, majorettes, dancers, and volunteers, all in an explosion of music and movement.
In recent years, the Pro Loco Gela, together with the Municipality of Gela and local schools, has worked to restore the Carnival's authentic spirit, especially for children. The central theme is often Sicilian identity, reflected in the colors, flavors, and atmosphere of the celebration. There are also side events, such as the distribution of masks in the Macchitella district and the famous sfingiata, a delicious tasting of fritters that adds to the atmosphere of joy and sharing.
The parades take place in the center of Gela, with festivities in squares and city parks such as Villetta Auriga and the Villa Comunale, typically concluding in Piazza San Francesco in front of the Town Hall, often with a show or concert. The Gela Carnival is held during the traditional Carnival period, between February and early March.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition of the Gela Carnival. The 2026 Carnival falls in the second half of February, the period when the Gela parades historically take place. Following the recovery seen in the previous edition, the municipal administration and the Pro Loco Gela have expressed their intention to offer an even more structured and engaging festival. The detailed program will be communicated through the official channels of the Municipality of Gela and the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the event.
Gela can be reached by car via the SS117bis and SS115; the city is served by the Gela railway station on the Caltanissetta-Siracusa line. The nearest airports are Comiso and Catania-Fontanarossa.
The parades and most events are free and take place along the main street and in the city center squares. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Gela and the Pro Loco Gela for the updated program and parade times.
