The challenge between brovada producers in the heart of the Friulian plain
There is a dish that, more than others, tells the gastronomic identity of Friuli: brovada, obtained from the fermentation of turnips in pomace. A humble and ancient food, capable of transforming a simple vegetable into a unique flavour, a must on Friulian winter tables. Celebrating it is the Gara de Broade, an original competition that every February enlivens Tomba di Mereto, a hamlet of the municipality of Mereto di Tomba in the province of Udine.
The event pits the territory's brovada producers against each other in a true competition. Participants are given some raw turnips, and then it's up to the public to decide: tasting is open to everyone, each person tastes, compares, and votes. It's a simple and engaging mechanism that makes visitors the protagonists and celebrates peasant tradition in a cheerful and participatory way. The announcement of the winners rewards the three best producers.
The Gara de Broade is not just a competition: it is above all a moment of conviviality. To crown the day, a Bolognese lasagna offered to all attendees, a gesture of hospitality that transforms the competition into a true village festival.
