About GallinaRock

Every summer, Parco San Leonardo in Gallinaro—a small village in the Comino Valley, in the province of Frosinone—transforms into the headquarters of Italian independent music. Founded in 2009 by Luigi Vacana, GallinaRock combines a competition for emerging bands, big names from the alternative scene, and a space dedicated to visual arts. It is a festival free in spirit, strictly plastic-free, and among the first in Italy to translate songs into sign language.

An independent festival in Ciociaria

Gallinaro has just over a thousand inhabitants and overlooks the Comino Valley, the green amphitheater in the province of Frosinone that marks the border between Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise. For nearly twenty years, during the first weeks of August, this village has become one of the most recognizable appointments for independent music in the Lazio region: GallinaRock takes over Parco San Leonardo, a green area in the heart of the town, turning it into an open-air stage beneath the trees.

Uninterrupted since 2009

The festival was conceived and directed in 2009 by Luigi Vacana, who has not missed a single edition since, continuing even through the pandemic years. The event is produced and promoted by the Talenti Cultural Association. Over eighteen editions, more than 320 bands and approximately 1,350 musicians have graced the Gallinaro stage: numbers that tell the story of the festival's vocation, which is more interested in nurturing a scene than chasing the most high-sounding names.

A lucky stage

GallinaRock's reputation has been built primarily on its competition for emerging bands, which selects the groups invited to open the main evenings each year. The prize is not just the stage: winning artists are presented with a work of art created by the Academy of Fine Arts of Frosinone. Names that later became familiar to the Italian public, such as KuTso, Marta sui Tubi, and Lo Stato Sociale, passed through here when they were still at the beginning of their careers; this is why people in Gallinaro say it is "a lucky stage."

Music, art, and accessibility

The programming is not limited to concerts. The GallinArtRock area transforms the park into a widespread exhibition space with installations, colors, and contributions from the involved artists, while food stands offer sandwiches, grilled meats, and desserts throughout the evening. The festival is strictly plastic-free and, a choice that distinguishes it on the national scene, provides LIS (Italian Sign Language) interpretation: songs are translated live into sign language, making the concerts accessible to the deaf community as well. It was one of the first festivals in Italy to adopt this practice systematically.

Who has passed through Gallinaro

Over the years, the lineup has alternated between singer-songwriters, rock, rap, and reggae and dub sounds, with guests such as 99 Posse, Sud Sound System, Bandabardò, Giancane, and Piotta. A coherent artistic line that looks to the Italian alternative scene and its social roots rather than the charts.

  • Where: Parco San Leonardo, Gallinaro (FR), Lazio
  • When: Early August, two evenings
  • Organizer: Talenti Cultural Association, artistic direction by Luigi Vacana
  • What to expect: Emerging band competition, headliners of the independent scene, art area, food stands

A summer in the Comino Valley

For those arriving from outside the area, GallinaRock is also a great excuse to discover the Comino Valley: Alvito, Atina, Picinisco, and the Lazio side of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise are all just a few kilometers away. The atmosphere of the festival is that of a rare, old-fashioned village feast that has chosen quality music: familiar, open-air, and barrier-free.

GallinaRock — edition 2026

The 18th edition of GallinaRock takes place on August 5 and 6, 2026, at Parco San Leonardo in Gallinaro, in the province of Frosinone. The festival comes of age with two evenings alternating between emerging bands selected from the competition and guests from the Italian independent scene: Francesco Di Bella, Johnny Freak, and, as a closing act, 99 Posse with an official date of their 2026 tour.

GallinaRock comes of age

Eighteen consecutive editions since 2009: the 2026 appointment is for Wednesday, August 5, and Thursday, August 6 at Parco San Leonardo in Gallinaro (FR). The formula remains the one that has made the Comino Valley festival recognizable: a competition for emerging bands at the opening, headliners of the Italian alternative scene at the closing, the GallinArtRock exhibition area, and a focus on accessibility.

The two evenings

The first evening opens at dusk with emerging bands, introduced by La Casa delle Nuvole, winners of the previous edition, and continues with the concert of Francesco Di Bella, the Neapolitan singer-songwriter and former voice of 24 Grana. The second evening is entrusted to the winners of the 2026 competition, the energy of Johnny Freak, and finally 99 Posse: the historic Neapolitan group, with over thirty years of career behind them, stops in Gallinaro with an official date of their 2026 Tour. Both evenings conclude with an aftershow DJ set.

More than just concerts

This year, the park will once again host the GallinArtRock area, with installations and artistic contributions, as well as the prize created by the Academy of Fine Arts of Frosinone for the competition winners. The festival is plastic-free and provides LIS interpretation for the deaf audience.
