International contemporary dance festival in the heart of Rome
Fuori Programma is the international contemporary dance festival that opens the capital's summer season every year between June and July. Founded in 2016, it is now one of the most anticipated events on the Italian choreographic scene: its formula alternates between theater stages and outdoor performances, with site-specific projects created specifically to engage with the timeless settings of the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region.
The festival is directed by Valentina Marini and promoted by ORBITA | Spellbound Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Lazio Region, and Roma Capitale - Department of Culture. The festival benefits from the collaboration of Teatro di Roma, ATCL, and the Institut français - French Embassy, a network that allows it to host companies from all over Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
One of the distinctive features of Fuori Programma is its choice to traverse the entire city, connecting the monumental center with the more peripheral neighborhoods. The main venues are:
The program alternates world and Italian premieres, sunset performances in the Teatro India Arena, sound and visual installations, participatory workshops, and artist talks. Alongside established names in international choreography, there is space for studio projects by young authors, with evenings dedicated to the new generations of Italian dance. The programming is designed for a broad audience: you don't need to be an expert in contemporary dance to be drawn in by works that weave together movement, live music, visual arts, and the urban landscape.
Watching contemporary dance in the courtyard of Palazzo Farnese at sunset, or attending a world premiere in the Teatro India Arena as evening falls over the Tiber, is an experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Over the years, Fuori Programma has built a precise identity: international quality programming, attention to emerging languages, and a close relationship with the city's locations, which become an integral part of the dramaturgy. It is the most beautiful way to start the Roman summer.
The atmosphere is informal and welcoming: you arrive early, sit outdoors, and often an evening includes two or three performances in sequence in different spaces of the same theater. The festival is very popular with students, dance professionals, and the curious, and for several seasons it has also attracted tourists who happen to be in Rome during the first weeks of summer.
From June 21 to July 10, 2026, the eleventh edition of Fuori Programma traversed Rome with a powerful theme: the Mediterranean as a space of transformation and new sensitive geographies. The artistic direction of Valentina Marini built a path starting from the creative residency at Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo on June 21, moving through the most spectacular moment at Palazzo Farnese, and then focusing on the evenings at Teatro India.
The program featured 5 world premieres, 5 Italian premieres, and 2 first viewings, accompanied by workshops and participatory projects such as «Lo sguardo performativo» curated by Teatro e Critica, the audition-workshop «Forget Diplomacy» led by Irene Russolillo, and the interactive multimedia installation «Eco», created by students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome.
Opening of the festival with the creative residency and community projects in the Quarticciolo neighborhood.
Note: the performance «Triple Trip» by Roberto Tedesco / Spellbound, scheduled for July 5, has been cancelled.
Teatro India: Metro B, Marconi or Piramide stop, then bus towards Lungotevere Vittorio Gassman; alternatively, the Rome-Lido railway. Palazzo Farnese: reachable on foot from Campo de' Fiori, in the historic center (buses 46, 62, 64 to Corso Vittorio Emanuele II). Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo: Metro C, Alessandrino or Tor Tre Teste stop, or trams 5 and 19.
The box office for performances at Teatro India is managed by Vivaticket. For the site-specific performance at Palazzo Farnese, booking is mandatory via a dedicated platform, with limited seating for safety reasons. Early booking is recommended: capacities are limited and some evenings sell out days in advance.
Performances in the Arena take place outdoors: bring water and light clothing, but also a sweatshirt for late evening. Arrive at least twenty minutes before the indicated time, as entry to the hall is not guaranteed once the performance has started. Information and updated program at fuoriprogramma.com.
