About Corpus Christi Procession

In Castelrotto/Kastelruth, at the foot of the Sciliar massif, the Fronleichnam Procession is one of the most evocative Corpus Christi celebrations in South Tyrol. Following Holy Mass in the parish church, the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the village streets under a canopy, accompanied by statues of saints, banners, a brass band, the Schützen, and locals dressed in traditional Tyrolean attire. A deeply rooted expression of faith within the Bolzano province community.

The Corpus Christi procession in Castelrotto

In the heart of the Dolomites, at the foot of the imposing Sciliar massif, the village of Castelrotto/Kastelruth (Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) celebrates one of its most cherished religious traditions every year: the Fronleichnam Procession, the solemn Corpus Christi parade. It is an event that weaves together faith, community, and South Tyrolean folklore, set against the stunning backdrop of the Alpe di Siusi.

A centuries-old tradition of South Tyrolean faith

Corpus Christi is a major feast in the liturgical calendar, during which the Catholic Church celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In South Tyrol, Corpus Christi processions have always been a moment of great importance for village communities, alongside the autumn harvest thanksgiving. In Castelrotto, the event preserves the solemnity of an ancient rite, experienced with deep devotion by the entire village.

How the procession unfolds

The day begins with Holy Mass in the parish church of Castelrotto. Following the service, the procession begins, winding through the streets of the historic center before returning to the church. The consecrated host, held in the monstrance, is carried under a canopy, while statues of saints, banners, and guild insignias are paraded along the route. The procession is accompanied by the brass band (Musikkapelle), the Schützen (historic Tyrolean rifle companies), altar servers, and the faithful, many of whom wear the traditional Tyrolean costume (Tracht). It is this vibrant display of traditional dress and music that makes the Castelrotto procession one of the most photographed and admired in South Tyrol.

An event to experience with respect

While the Fronleichnam Procession attracts many visitors, it remains first and foremost a religious rite. Those attending are invited to observe the procession with respect, maintaining order and witnessing the event with reverence. It is a precious opportunity to discover the culture and spirituality of the Castelrotto community and the entire Sciliar-Alpe di Siusi area.
