The Madonie spring festival in Isnello, featuring fava beans, peas, and artichokes cooked in traditional 'quadare' cauldrons
The Frittella Festival, which locals call the Sagra della Frittedda in dialect, is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Isnello, a small town in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. The event takes place at the end of April and celebrates the arrival of spring through the dish that best represents the season's first harvest: the 'frittedda'.
The 'frittedda' is a traditional Sicilian peasant dish prepared with freshly picked vegetables: fava beans, peas, artichokes, and wild fennel, all cooked in generous amounts of local olive oil. In the days leading up to the festival, local volunteers shell the beans and peas, then cook everything in quadare—traditional large copper cauldrons—where the mixture is constantly stirred (the arriminata). The result is a fragrant, authentic dish served to participants alongside bread and a good glass of local wine.
On the evening of the festival, the organizing committee arranges tastings at various spots throughout the village, which is illuminated to create a charming atmosphere. A brass band plays through the main streets, while the historic center, gathered around the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, becomes the natural stage for the festivities. It is a perfect opportunity to rediscover the alleys of this Madonie village and its warm hospitality.
The Frittella Festival is not an isolated event; it anticipates and introduces the Feast of the Santissimo Crocifisso, which is celebrated on May 1st. Devotion to the Crucifix, housed in the Church of Santa Maria, has deep roots in the Confraternity of the Assumption. On the afternoon of the feast, the Frottola is sung—ancient hymns of praise in honor of the Saints and the Blessed Sacrament—blending religious tradition with the popular festivities that deeply define the community of Isnello.
Isnello is a village worth visiting beyond the festival: nestled in the Madonie Park, it hosts the GAL Hassin, an international center for astronomical sciences, and offers some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in inland Sicily. Attending the Frittella Festival means combining the discovery of an authentic gastronomic tradition with the charm of a territory that preserves nature, history, and a starry sky.
The 2026 edition of the Frittella Festival took place on April 29, 2026, in Isnello, with tastings starting at 8:30 PM. The festival committee organized the distribution of frittedda at various points in the village, which was illuminated for the occasion, near the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The 'quadare' filled with local olive oil hosted fava beans, peas, artichokes, and wild fennel, served for free with local bread and wine. A brass band entertained the main streets of the village. The festival opened the cycle of celebrations for the Santissimo Crocifisso, which culminated on May 1st with the singing of the 'Frottola'.
Isnello can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Buonfornello exit and continuing towards the Madonie along the SS643. From Palermo, the journey takes about an hour and a half. The nearest train station is CefalĂą-Castelbuono, from which you can continue by car or local bus.
Admission to the festival is free: the 'frittedda' is offered to all participants along with bread and local wine. Tasting begins in the evening near the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and at various points in the historic center.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking through the village alleys and a light jacket for the evening, given the cool mountain climate. It is worth combining your visit with the Feast of the SS. Crocifisso on May 1st and a hike in the Madonie Park.
