The queen of Salento cuisine celebrates in Nardò
The Frisa Festival is one of the most deeply rooted and anticipated culinary events of the Nardò summer. It takes place in Nardò, an elegant Baroque city in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region. For one evening, the Sacro Cuore di Gesù parish grounds are transformed into a vibrant open-air celebration, filled with the aromas of traditional cooking, communal tables, and live music.
At the heart of the festival is the frisa (or frisella), a traditional wheat or barley twice-baked bread that is soaked in water and topped with fresh tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and oregano. It is one of the most authentic and beloved symbols of Salento cuisine—a simple, rustic dish that tells the story of this land's farming heritage. During the festival, the frisa is served according to traditional local recipes, inviting guests to rediscover authentic flavors and enjoy a convivial evening.
The event is organized as part of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and stems from the dedication of the parish community and the Festival Committee. It is an occasion that unites religious tradition, popular culture, and entertainment, highlighting one of the most cherished specialties of Salento gastronomy. The evening is brought to life by live music and performances, with bands and guests providing entertainment late into the night.
Visiting the Frisa Festival is the perfect opportunity to explore Nardò, a jewel of Lecce Baroque architecture featuring the spectacular Piazza Salandra, and to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a Salento summer, with its crystal-clear sea, historic masserie, and folk traditions. The festival is held under the patronage of the Province of Lecce and the City of Nardò, a testament to its significance for the local area.
The 31st edition of the Frisa Festival was held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, starting at 8:30 PM, at the Sacro Cuore di Gesù parish grounds in Nardò. Once again, the undisputed star was the frisa, served according to traditional local recipes and accompanied by the authentic flavors of the Salento region. The event, organized as part of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with the patronage of the Province of Lecce and the City of Nardò, combined religious tradition, popular culture, and entertainment in an evening of great participation.
