Paragliding, hang gliding, and nature on Monte Scalambra, in the heart of Ciociaria
Every summer, the sky above Serrone, a village in the province of Frosinone on the border between Ciociaria and the Prenestini Mountains, fills with colorful sails. The Free Flight Festival, accompanied by the Hang Gliding Rally, transforms Monte Scalambra into a natural amphitheater where paragliders and hang gliders perform maneuvers above the Sacco River valley. In 2026, the event reaches its 8th edition, while the rally dedicated to hang gliders celebrates its 5th: a double event that attracts pilots, enthusiasts, and curious onlookers from all over Lazio and beyond.
The bond between Serrone and free flight has its roots in the early eighties, when pioneers began launching themselves from the slopes of Monte Scalambra, first with hang gliders and then with paragliders. Since then, the launch site has been recognized as one of the most appreciated flying spots in Central Italy, with a view stretching across the Sacco valley to the Roman countryside. Around this passion, the Serrone Vola sports association and a local movement have grown, which, together with the Municipality of Serrone, the Pro Loco, and the Youth Group, bring the festival days to life.
The heart of the event is, naturally, flight. On both days, from 9:00 AM, the Monte Scalambra launch site hosts flights from the Rome Paragliding School, while from 10:00 AM an open day allows anyone to get closer to paragliding and hang gliding courses. From 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, tandem flights by reservation are available—a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of free flight in total safety alongside an expert pilot—alongside free flights by registered pilots, offering the public a continuous spectacle of sails in the sky.
The festival is also designed for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. On Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, there is dog trekking, an excursion on the mountain trails in the company of your dogs, while on Sunday at 8:30 AM, an immersive trekking tour with expert guides begins. Cycling enthusiasts can take advantage of the free shuttle service to the trails of the Serrone Enduro Park, a mountain biking landmark in Lazio, active on both days from 9:00 AM.
From 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM, the food and wine stand set up in the launch area offers local products and dishes, accompanied by a panoramic aperitif overlooking the valley. Serrone is located in the Cesanese district, a land of wines and genuine Ciociaria flavors, and the festival is also an opportunity to discover them at over a thousand meters above sea level.
The Free Flight Festival is one of the flagship events of SERRONEinSPORT, the summer calendar with which the Municipality of Serrone, in the Lazio Region, promotes sports and active tourism between the main town and the La Forma district: cycling tours, tournaments, uphill races, and days dedicated to the mountains. A project that has made this small Ciociaria village a true capital of free flight and outdoor sports in Central Italy.
The 2026 edition of "Coloring the Skies... Serrone Takes Flight!" takes place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19 on Monte Scalambra, in Serrone (Frosinone). The 8th Free Flight Festival and the 5th Hang Gliding Rally offer a program that combines sport, nature, and conviviality: from 9:00 AM, flights by the Rome Paragliding School; from 10:00 AM, an open day to get started with paragliding and hang gliding courses; and from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, tandem flights by reservation along with free flights by registered pilots.
Saturday morning is dedicated to dog trekking (8:30 AM, by reservation), Sunday to immersive trekking with expert guides, while on both days a free shuttle takes pilots and mountain bikers to the launch site and the trails of the Serrone Enduro Park. From 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM, the food and wine stand in the launch area accompanies the festival with local flavors and a panoramic aperitif over the Sacco valley.
Serrone is located in the province of Frosinone, about an hour's drive from Rome: from the A1 motorway (Anagni-Fiuggi Terme exit), continue in the direction of Piglio-Serrone. The launch area can be reached from the village by following the signs for Monte Scalambra; during the festival, a free shuttle service is available for pilots and mountain bikers (9:00 AM).
Free admission. Tandem flights, dog trekking, and trekking by reservation at +39 328 6125640. Trekking shoes, water, and sunscreen are recommended: the event takes place at altitude and outdoors.
