About Fratte Rosa in Acquerello

Two days in which the medieval village of Fratte Rosa, in the hinterland of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, transforms into a large open-air canvas. Over eighty Italian and foreign watercolor artists paint en plein air amidst alleys, views, and panoramas, while the historic center hosts a traveling group exhibition, workshops open to all, and a display of the works created. A free and non-competitive event, part of the international circuit of Fabriano in Acquarello.

A village that becomes a canvas

Fratte Rosa in Acquerello is the watercolor plein air painting event that annually enlivens the historic center of Fratte Rosa, a small municipality in the province of Pesaro and Urbino known for centuries for its terracotta and clay craftsmanship. For an entire weekend, the village in the Marche region fills with easels, brushes, and palettes: artists paint en plein air, capturing the alleys, medieval views, and panoramas of the Valcesano directly from life.

An international and free event

The event attracts over eighty watercolor artists from all over Italy and abroad: over the years, artists from France, Germany, Sweden, and several Eastern European countries have participated. The event is part of the prestigious international exhibition Fabriano in Acquarello and the Italian Network of Watercolor Cities, of which Fratte Rosa is a member. The spirit is explicitly non-competitive: the goal is not to award a winner but to freely enhance the sensitivity of each participant.

What to see and do

  • En plein air plein air painting: artists paint live in the squares and alleys of the village.
  • Traveling art exhibition: a widespread exhibition route in the historic center.
  • Watercolor workshops open to adults and children, with works then displayed in the square.
  • Exhibition of works created by participants during the two days.
  • Terracotta takes center stage: presentations and demonstrations related to the village's ceramic tradition, which gives its name to the editions dedicated to the "colors of baked clay".

The village of terracotta

Visiting Fratte Rosa during the event also means discovering an authentic village in the Marche hinterland, where the art of clay is still alive. Between brushstrokes, you can visit the local museum, the artisan workshops, and taste typical products, in a quiet and familiar atmosphere far from mass tourism. Admission to all activities, workshops, and the exhibition route is free.

Fratte Rosa in Acquerello โ€” edition 2026

The fifth edition of Fratte Rosa in Acquerello returns on the weekend of June 13-14, 2026, still in the historic center of the village of terracotta. Over eighty watercolor artists from Italy and abroad paint en plein air, alongside workshops, the traveling exhibition, and the inauguration of the "Author Photography" exhibition. All activities are free.

For its fifth edition, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2026, Fratte Rosa in Acquerello confirms the formula that has led to its success: over eighty watercolor artists, Italian and foreign, paint live in the alleys and squares of the village, creating a large open-air gallery. On the same weekend, the "Author Photography" exhibition is inaugurated, enriching the artistic program.

The watercolor workshops open to the public, the traveling art exhibition in the historic center, and the final exhibition of the works created are also confirmed. The event, organized by the Associazione Arte al Borgo with the patronage of the Municipality and the Regional Council of Marche, is part of the international circuit of Fabriano in Acquarello. The detailed program with times and guests will be announced by the organization in the weeks preceding the event.
