The watercolor plein air painting event in the village of terracotta
Fratte Rosa in Acquerello is the watercolor plein air painting event that annually enlivens the historic center of Fratte Rosa, a small municipality in the province of Pesaro and Urbino known for centuries for its terracotta and clay craftsmanship. For an entire weekend, the village in the Marche region fills with easels, brushes, and palettes: artists paint en plein air, capturing the alleys, medieval views, and panoramas of the Valcesano directly from life.
The event attracts over eighty watercolor artists from all over Italy and abroad: over the years, artists from France, Germany, Sweden, and several Eastern European countries have participated. The event is part of the prestigious international exhibition Fabriano in Acquarello and the Italian Network of Watercolor Cities, of which Fratte Rosa is a member. The spirit is explicitly non-competitive: the goal is not to award a winner but to freely enhance the sensitivity of each participant.
Visiting Fratte Rosa during the event also means discovering an authentic village in the Marche hinterland, where the art of clay is still alive. Between brushstrokes, you can visit the local museum, the artisan workshops, and taste typical products, in a quiet and familiar atmosphere far from mass tourism. Admission to all activities, workshops, and the exhibition route is free.
For its fifth edition, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2026, Fratte Rosa in Acquerello confirms the formula that has led to its success: over eighty watercolor artists, Italian and foreign, paint live in the alleys and squares of the village, creating a large open-air gallery. On the same weekend, the "Author Photography" exhibition is inaugurated, enriching the artistic program.
The watercolor workshops open to the public, the traveling art exhibition in the historic center, and the final exhibition of the works created are also confirmed. The event, organized by the Associazione Arte al Borgo with the patronage of the Municipality and the Regional Council of Marche, is part of the international circuit of Fabriano in Acquarello. The detailed program with times and guests will be announced by the organization in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the fifth edition (times, presentations, and guests) will be published by the Associazione Arte al Borgo in the weeks preceding the event. The established structure of the days includes:
Works from the workshops will be displayed in the square at the end of each day.
