The Frassinetto Carnival in the Soana Valley, between masks and tradition
Perched at over a thousand meters above sea level on the so-called "Balcony of the Canavese", the town of Frassinetto has just over two hundred inhabitants but, like many villages in the Soana Valley, it preserves a calendar of deeply rooted festivals. The Carnival Festival, organized by the Frassinetto Pro Loco, is one of the most cherished winter events: an evening where this small village in the Metropolitan City of Turin comes alive with masks, joy, and a sense of togetherness.
The central moment of the festival is the appearance of the masked characters in front of the Town Hall, usually starting at 9:00 PM. From there, a convivial evening begins, culminating in the award for the most original costume: a recognition that rewards the participants' creativity and encourages families and groups of friends to invent the most surprising disguises year after year.
The Frassinetto Carnival is not an isolated event: it is part of the broader Soana Valley Carnival, which involves the Pro Loco associations of the valley's municipalities. Alongside the Saturday night party, the tradition continues on Sunday with the float parade, a moment that brings together the inhabitants of the entire valley for a day of color and fun. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Alpine Piedmont, far from the major tourist flows.
A simple and warm evening, far from the big city carnivals but capable of conveying the most authentic spirit of this Piedmontese popular festival.
