Celebrating the PGI Tarocco orange in the heart of Sicily's citrus country
Located in the heart of the Catania Plain but within the province of Syracuse, the town of Francofonte is known as the 'city of citrus'. Every year between February and March, it hosts the Francofonte Red Orange Festival, one of the most beloved food and wine events in Eastern Sicily. The festival celebrates the PGI Sicilian red orange in its three prized varieties—Tarocco, Moro, and Sanguinello—a fruit that has driven the town's agricultural success and colors markets across the island.
Organized by the Pro Loco Francofonte APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Francofonte, the festival has gained prestige far beyond regional borders over the years. The event has been awarded the 'Quality Festival' mark by the Italian National Union of Pro Loco (UNPLI), a recognition even celebrated with an award ceremony at the Italian Senate: a seal that certifies organizational excellence and the ability to promote the territory through local traditions and products.
For two days, the historic center of Francofonte—spanning Via Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Garibaldi, and Piazza del Popolo—transforms into a vibrant hub of popular celebration. The program blends taste, folklore, and entertainment:
With attendance regularly exceeding several thousand visitors, the Francofonte Red Orange Festival is now a staple of the late-winter Sicilian festival calendar. It serves not only as a showcase for the region's citrus excellence but also as an opportunity to discover the identity of Francofonte and the charm of the hinterland between the provinces of Syracuse and Catania.
The 15th edition of the Francofonte Red Orange Festival brought Francofonte to life on Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, 2026. Saturday began at 9:30 AM with the opening of the stalls, followed by the official inauguration at 10:00 AM. The day continued with the Giants of Varapodio, the 'Face The Fears Live' show, the 'Casale Canicattini' musicians and flag-wavers, and the highly anticipated concert by I Cugini di Campagna at 7:00 PM, followed by a DJ set by Gaetano Failla. Sunday celebrated Sicilian roots with the Sicilian cart parade, the 'The Tuning Squad' car meet, 'Fusioni Dance' entertainment, and the closing 'Disco Inferno Live' concert dedicated to 1970s hits.
Francofonte is located in the Sicilian hinterland, on the border between the provinces of Syracuse and Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SS194 (Ragusana) or the A19 motorway, taking the exit toward the Catania Plain. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, approximately 45 km away.
The festival typically takes place on the last weekend of February or the first few days of March. Events are spread throughout the historic center from morning until evening.
Access to the event and performances is free; tastings and products at the stalls are available for purchase.
