A journey through time in the village of Garessio

Fragments of the Past is the historical re-enactment that brings the streets of the Borgo Maggiore of Garessio to life every year on August 13th, in the municipality of Garessio (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont). Listed among Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, the ancient medieval core provides the perfect backdrop for an event that transports residents and tourists alike to another era, complete with period costumes, processions, and meticulously curated scenery.

The "From Cavour to the Bela Rosìn" re-enactment

The central theme of the event is the Risorgimento re-enactment titled From Cavour to the Bela Rosìn, which brings historical figures linked to Piedmont and the House of Savoy back to life. Key characters include Princess Maria Clotilde, Prince Umberto, the Countess of Villa Marina, and the legendary Bela Rosìn, Rosa Vercellana. The day blends the spectacle of a historical pageant with the charm of a village that still keeps its roots intact.

Atmosphere and setting

For one day, the ancient districts of the village fill with participants in period dress, reconstructed scenes of daily life, traditional crafts, and entertainment that engages both adults and children. The commitment to showcasing Garessio's architectural heritage and historical memory makes Fragments of the Past much more than just a festival: it is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of this corner of the Upper Tanaro Valley.

A community event

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Garessio with the support of the Municipality of Garessio and the Piedmont Region. Each year, the organization recruits new participants, even those without theatrical experience, a testament to an event deeply rooted in the life of the town. The evening traditionally concludes with a dinner at the Pro Loco area, a convivial moment that brings locals and visitors together.

Garessio, a village between mountains and history

Nestled along the banks of the Tanaro River at an altitude of about 600 meters, Garessio is known for its San Bernardo mineral waters, prized chestnut groves, and proximity to the Royal Castle of Casotto, an ancient charterhouse and Savoy residence. Visiting the village during Fragments of the Past means combining the allure of a historical re-enactment with the discovery of one of the most characteristic centers in the province of Cuneo.
