The grand parade of allegorical floats along Via Roma
The Fossano Carnival is one of the most cherished carnival celebrations in the province of Cuneo and the entire Piedmont region. Organized by the Municipality of Fossano in collaboration with the Pro Loco, and supported by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fossano and the ATL, the event transforms the city's historic center into a vast open-air stage, where art, color, and joy merge in a parade that enchants thousands of spectators.
The heart of the festival is the grand parade of allegorical floats along Via Roma, one of the most picturesque streets in Fossano's center. The procession starts from the Foro Boario and Piazza Battuti Rossi, led by the Filarmonica Arrigo Boito and the Sbandieratori dei Principi d'Acaja, accompanied by a historical pageant and local neighborhood groups. The floats are judged and awarded prizes before the public based on several criteria: visual impact, theme, choreography and costumes, satire and topicality, as well as a special recognition dedicated to joy.
The parade features masked groups from Fossano and numerous towns in the Cuneo and Turin areas, including Villafalletto, Mondovì, Racconigi, Pinerolo, Scalenghe, Verzuolo, and Centallo. Each float brings hundreds of costumed participants to the square, averaging about 200 people per vehicle. Including volunteers, stewards, authorities, and the public, the parade day draws thousands of people, confirming the organizational strength and popular appeal of the event.
The Fossano Carnival is not just a parade, but a collective event that involves the entire community: local neighborhoods, associations, parish youth groups, and town committees work for months on building the floats and preparing costumes. Alongside the parade, the program includes music, entertainment, and social gatherings, such as the traditional Carnival Dinner organized by the Pro Loco at the Sports Hall.
As one of the premier winter events in the Fossano calendar, the Fossano Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover the city's historic center in the province of Cuneo during a day of celebration that combines traditional Piedmontese folklore, creativity, and fun for families and children.
