A craft fair among the Walser houses

The Formazza Summer Fair is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in the upper Val d'Ossola, located in the municipality of Formazza, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont). It takes place in the hamlet of Valdo, at the Festival Area, and features a market exhibition entirely dedicated to mountain craftsmanship. Dozens of exhibitors, all artisans from the Val d'Ossola and neighboring valleys, display their original works: small objects that express creativity and imagination, always sparking the curiosity and interest of the large crowds that attend the fair.

The Walser context of Val Formazza

Formazza is one of the most important Walser communities in the Italian Alps: a population of Alemannic origin that settled here in the Middle Ages, leaving behind a unique language (Pomatt), unmistakable architecture, and traditions deeply rooted in the mountains. The fair is held right next to the typical Walser dwellings built of wood and stone, a setting that makes the event much more than just a market: it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the cultural identity of the northernmost valley in Piedmont.

The country festival

Alongside the market, the country festival is held at the Valdo Festival Area: a convivial gathering with a food court serving local gastronomic specialties, turning the day into a true village celebration. It is the perfect occasion to savor the flavors of Ossola and Walser cuisine after strolling through the stalls.

A consolidated tradition

Now with nearly thirty years of history, the Summer Fair is organized by the Pro Loco Formazza with the support of the Municipality. In the valley's summer calendar, it stands alongside other popular events like the BUT Formazza, confirming Formazza as one of the most vibrant destinations in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola alpine summer.
