The Christmas market at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the heart of the Walser village
At the foot of the East Face of Monte Rosa, the highest peak in the Alps, the village of Macugnaga hosts its famous Christmas Markets every year on the last weekend of November. Organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the Tourist Operators Consortium, the event brings the streets of Frazione Staffa, the main village of the municipality, to life and officially kicks off the holiday magic in the Anzasca Valley.
What makes this market unique is its setting: the ancient Walser huts, with their stone roofs and wooden balconies, provide a backdrop for the stalls, offering an authentic and intimate atmosphere rarely found elsewhere. Strolling among the wooden cabins while the air is scented with hot chocolate, mulled wine, and seasonal sweets is an experience that evokes childhood memories and instantly gets you into the Christmas spirit.
Around one hundred exhibitors offer a rich assortment of gift ideas and local products. Among the stalls, you can discover:
The most beloved attraction, especially for children, is the Ice Queen, a fairy-tale character who accompanies the market with shows and surprises, turning the streets of Staffa into a small enchanted kingdom. With music, festive moments, and food corners, the entire day becomes a perfect opportunity to experience Christmas with the family in a stunning alpine setting.
Visiting the Christmas Markets is also a chance to discover Macugnaga, an ancient Walser-speaking settlement in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the heart of Piedmont. Beyond the stalls, the village offers the charm of its churches, the Mountain Museum, and historic gold mines, while Monte Rosa dominates the horizon with its snow-capped peaks: a weekend that combines tradition, gastronomy, and landscape into a single experience.
The 2026 edition of the Macugnaga Christmas Markets takes place on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, in Frazione Staffa. Around 100 exhibitors bring the town center to life with Christmas decorations, wooden and ceramic crafts, gift ideas, and typical Piedmontese products.
The Ice Queen, a beloved attraction for the little ones, will also be present with shows and surprises, accompanied by music, food corners, and festive moments in the charming setting of the Walser village at the foot of Monte Rosa. Free admission.
