About Fontegreca Living Nativity

The Fontegreca Living Nativity brings the historic center of this small Matese village, in the province of Caserta, to life during the Christmas season. Among the stone alleys, dozens of scenes recreate the Nativity according to the Neapolitan tradition: the inn, the Three Wise Men, shepherds, and ancient crafts such as embroiderers, bakers, and the carpenter. A participatory event that involves adults, youth, and children from the entire community, breathing new life into the village's ancient homes.

The Fontegreca Living Nativity

In the heart of the Caserta Matese, the Municipality of Fontegreca (province of Caserta, in Campania) hosts its Living Nativity during the Christmas season: an itinerant performance that transforms the village's historic center into a grand Nativity stage. Amidst cobblestone alleys, courtyards, and ancient houses, the community brings to life a collective story that blends faith, memory, and popular tradition.

The Neapolitan Nativity tradition

The living nativity is rooted in the great Neapolitan tradition, one of the richest and most famous in Italy. In Fontegreca, this heritage translates into numerous living tableaux that reconstruct the birth of Jesus: the Nativity with the Holy Family, the procession of the Three Wise Men, the inn, shepherds with their flocks, and many folk figures. Every scene is meticulously detailed, from costumes to period objects, to recreate the atmosphere of a village from two thousand years ago.

Scenes and ancient crafts

One of the most appreciated aspects is the re-enactment of ancient crafts and the daily life of the past. Along the route, visitors encounter:

  • the carpenter in his workshop;
  • the bakers busy preparing bread;
  • the embroiderers and spinners at work;
  • the wedding scene and those of the inn;
  • the Roman centurions guarding the village.

In total, about twenty-five different scenes are set up, animated by performers of all ages: adults, youth, and children participate to revive the gestures and activities of peasant civilization.

A reborn Matese village

Fontegreca is a small municipality known for its Cipresseta, one of the most evocative natural monuments in Campania. During the living nativity, the village, often quiet in the winter months, fills with lights, sounds, and visitors: the event has become an opportunity for the rebirth of the historic center and a source of pride for the entire community, which participates with great enthusiasm in its organization.

When it takes place

The event is held during the Christmas holidays, traditionally around Epiphany, in the first days of January. In 2025, the nativity took place on Sunday, January 5th. The event takes place in the evening, when the lighting and lit braziers make the atmosphere among the alleys even more evocative.

Useful information

Admission to the nativity route is free. The event is organized by a group of local volunteers with the support of the parish and the community of Fontegreca. Comfortable and warm clothing is recommended, suitable for an evening walk outdoors along the village streets.
