An evening of popular dances and music from around the world in Piazza Matteotti
The Folklore Festival of Massa Lombarda is one of the most anticipated evenings of the Massa summer. It is the city's stop of the International Folklore Festival, the historic traveling event promoted by the "Turibio Baruzzi" Folk Group of Imola, which has been bringing expressions of world folklore to Romagna since 1991. For one evening, Piazza Matteotti and the historic center of the Municipality of Massa Lombarda transform into a large open-air stage.
The heart of the event is the popular singing and dance ensembles invited each year from different countries. In recent editions, groups from Venezuela, Benin, Taiwan, Mexico, Thailand, and Hawaii have paraded in the square, alongside the Romagnoli hosts. Traditional costumes, typical instruments, and choreographies passed down from generation to generation follow one another in a colorful and engaging show, designed to bring audiences closer to distant cultures through the universal language of music and dance.
More than just a performance, the Folklore Festival has always been conceived as an occasion for meeting and dialogue: the organizers' stated goal is to spread a message of brotherhood and mutual understanding between different cultures, through folkloric expression. The guest groups are welcomed by the territory and perform in several locations in Emilia-Romagna, in a circuit that includes Imola, its surroundings, and various municipalities in the province of Ravenna, including Massa Lombarda.
The evening is part of the rich summer program of the Municipality of Massa Lombarda, titled "E…state a Massa", which enlivens the city with concerts, open-air cinema, festivals, markets, and family events. The Folklore Festival represents one of its signature events, capable of drawing residents and visitors from neighboring towns to the square in a festive popular atmosphere.
A simple and genuine evening that tells, in a square in Emilia-Romagna, the variety of the planet's cultures.
The 2026 edition of the Folklore Festival of Massa Lombarda is scheduled for Friday, July 24, in Piazza Matteotti, in the historic center of the Municipality. The evening is part of the International Folklore Festival circuit which, in late July, touches several locations in Emilia-Romagna between Imola and the province of Ravenna.
As every year, singing and popular dance groups from different countries will perform on stage, alongside the Romagnoli hosts. The complete lineup of guest groups and the detailed program for the evening will be published by the organization and the Municipality of Massa Lombarda in the weeks preceding the event. Admission is free.
