About Florianifeier Salorno

Every year in early May, the Volunteer Firefighters of Salorno (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Salurn) celebrate their patron saint, St. Florian, with the Florianifeier: a solemn mass at the Church of St. Joseph, a parade of the uniformed corps, and a social gathering at the fire station. It is a deeply felt tradition in the municipality of Salorno on the Wine Road, located in the far south of the Province of Bolzano, uniting faith, gratitude, and community spirit around the men and women who watch over the town's safety.

The Florianifeier in Salorno

The Florianifeier, or St. Florian's Day Festival, is the annual event where the Volunteer Firefighters of Salorno (in German Freiwillige Feuerwehr Salurn) pay tribute to their patron saint. It takes place in Salorno on the Wine Road (Salurn an der Weinstraße), the southernmost municipality in the Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige, where Italian and German cultures coexist.

Who was St. Florian

St. Florian of Lorch was a Roman officer stationed in Noricum, modern-day Austria. His Christian faith led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian: according to tradition, he was thrown into the Enns River with a millstone around his neck. For centuries, he has been venerated as the patron saint of firefighters and those who protect against fire and floods, a figure deeply rooted in the culture of the Tyrolean and South Tyrolean region.

How the festival unfolds

The feast day falls on May 4th, but in the towns of South Tyrol, volunteer fire brigades celebrate it on the nearest weekend to encourage community participation. In Salorno, the corps gathers in dress uniform for a solemn mass celebrated at the Church of St. Joseph (Josefikirche), in St.-Josef-Platz, in the Gries district. The service is followed by greetings from local authorities and a social gathering at the fire station, with refreshments offered to the public.

A community tradition

Founded in the second half of the 19th century, the Volunteer Firefighters of Salorno is a deeply rooted local institution, which also includes the detachment from the hamlet of Cauria. The Florianifeier is not just a religious moment: it is an opportunity to renew the values of volunteering, thank those who serve the town's safety for free, and pass on a sense of responsibility and belonging to the Salorno community to the younger generations.

Salorno on the Wine Road

Nestled along the Bassa Atesina, at the southern gateway to South Tyrol, the municipality of Salorno is famous for its vineyards and the majestic Haderburg Castle. Attending the Florianifeier means discovering the authentic soul of a bilingual village, where the ancient traditions of mountain and valley folk are still alive and shared.
