The patronal feast of Pelago in the heart of the Valdisieve
In the heart of the Valdisieve, amidst vineyards, olive groves, and the gentle ridges of the so-called Florentine mountains, the municipality of Pelago celebrates its patron saint, Saint Clement I, a Pope and martyr of the early centuries of Christianity, every year. The liturgical feast falls on November 23rd and is one of the most cherished events for the inhabitants of this village in the Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany.
The center of the entire festival is the Pieve di San Clemente in Piazza Cavalcanti, documented since the 13th century and elevated to the dignity of a parish church in 1413. Over the centuries, the building has been remodeled several times: between 1737 and 1740, under the patronage of the Bargiacchi family, it was enriched with a polychrome marble altar and three side altars, while the 1823-1824 restorations gave it its current appearance. Inside, a valuable 1695 scagliola altar frontal is preserved.
Since 1994, the church has also housed a Museum of Sacred Art, which collects works from churches in the area. Among the treasures kept there are a Madonna and Child attributed to Jacopino del Conte, a Nativity by Sebastiano Mainardi from the early 16th century, a 14th-century crucifix, and a baptismal font bearing the coat of arms of the da Filicaia family. During the patronal feast, the church thus becomes not only a place of worship but also an opportunity to rediscover the community's artistic and devotional heritage.
The Saint Clement Patronal Feast is organized by the San Clemente Parish in Pelago and lives primarily through its religious dimension: solemn Eucharistic celebrations, reflection around the figure of the saint, and moments of gathering between the families of the village and the surrounding hamlets, from Diacceto to Nipozzano, from Consuma to Borselli. It is one of those village festivals that preserve the most authentic identity of inland Tuscany, where faith intertwines with the daily life of a small community.
The patronal feast is also the ideal occasion to visit Pelago and its surroundings: the castle of Nipozzano, the convent of San Francesco, the Villa di Diacceto, and the Consuma pass, all immersed in a hilly landscape that slopes down toward Florence. An autumn in the Valdisieve, between sacred art, popular devotion, and local flavors.
The 2026 Saint Clement Patronal Feast is scheduled for Sunday, November 29th, according to the official calendar published by the Pro Loco Pelago. The edition will be held at the Pieve di San Clemente, on Piazza Cavalcanti, the religious and artistic heart of the Valdisieve village.
