The great equestrian endurance festival in the Peligna Valley
The municipality of Vittorito, nestled in the picturesque Peligna Valley in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo), has for years been one of the Italian capitals of endurance, the equestrian resistance discipline where horse and rider tackle courses of dozens of kilometers across dirt roads, trails, and countryside. The event is organized by the ASD Circolo Ippico I Cavalieri dell'Antera, which boasts one of the few endurance facilities in Vittorito active year-round.
This appointment effectively opens the competitive season of the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE) federal calendar. The program spans two days and awards the first stages of the FISE Italian Cup and the Young Horses Circuit, with trials also reserved for younger horses according to MASAF categories (horses born and bred in Italy).
The two-day event in Vittorito regularly attracts pairs from numerous Italian regions and various nations, involving riders, technicians, support staff, and families in a significant economic boost for the Peligna Valley area. The longer trials also serve as qualifiers for international category championships, making the Abruzzo appointment an important testing ground for Italian athletes and young horses.
Endurance in Vittorito is much more than a race: it is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, between the Aterno-Pescara river, olive groves, and the villages of the Peligna Valley, just a stone's throw from Sulmona and the Majella National Park. The public can follow the starts, transitions, and veterinary checks from the sidelines in a festive atmosphere that combines a passion for horses with the promotion of the Abruzzo countryside.
On March 28 and 29, 2026, Vittorito returned as the capital of endurance, hosting one of the most anticipated competitions of the discipline after a period of absence. Organized by ASD I Cavalieri dell'Antera, the two-day event saw over 180 pairs at the start, with about a thousand people involved including athletes, technicians, and families.
Saturday was dedicated to the longest trials, valid for the FISE Italian Cup and as international qualifiers: highlights included the CEI2* 120 km, the first stage of the FISE Young Horses Circuit, won by Anna Ginetto with Carezza de Zamaglia AA, and the CEI1* 100 km. Sunday featured the national CEN and MASAF categories reserved for younger horses. Despite the mud and rain of the previous days, the organization ensured the courses were in excellent condition.
Saturday, March 28: CEI2* 120 km (first stage of FISE Young Horses Circuit, horses 8+ years old) and CEI1* 100 km (first stage of FISE Italian Cup, 7-year-old horses), in addition to international CEI3* 160 km trials and young rider categories.
Sunday, March 29: National CEN B/R races valid as FISE Italian Cup for 6-7 year old horses and MASAF stage for 6-year-olds; CEN A and Beginners reserved for 5 and 4-year-old horses.
The races are held on the endurance field of the ASD I Cavalieri dell'Antera in Vittorito (AQ), in the Peligna Valley. The courses wind along dirt roads and trails in the surrounding countryside.
By car: A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, exit Pratola Peligna-Sulmona, then local roads towards Vittorito. By train: the reference station is Vittorito-Corfinio on the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line.
Public access to watch the races is generally free. For registration and regulations, please refer to the official FISE calendar.
