The night-time masquerade parade that sparked a new local tradition
The First Marene Carnival marked a significant milestone for the small town of Marene, located in the Province of Cuneo in the heart of the Piedmontese plains. For the first time in its history, the town hosted a true Carnival parade, complete with masks, confetti, and a large allegorical float that traveled through the town center in a festive atmosphere.
The initiative was born from the determination of the Marene Youth Council, a local group long active in organizing community events, which sought to provide Marene with its own carnival tradition, following the model of the many historic carnivals in the Cuneo and Saluzzo areas.
The highlight of the first edition was the night-time parade, featuring an impressive allegorical float from Racconigi titled "Retro-futuristic". It masterfully blended the past and the future in a display that reimagined Charlie Chaplin immersed in a world dominated by technology and artificial intelligence. The same float had previously won first prize at the Fossano Carnival.
Accompanying the float was the Marayun of Racconigi costumed group, fresh from parades in Barge, Saluzzo, and Fossano, who energized the evening with choreography that actively engaged the Marene public.
The success of this debut was made possible by the work of the Youth Council, supported by local law enforcement, the Carabinieri Volunteers Association, the Civil Protection, and numerous private local sponsors. Mayor Alberto Deninotti praised the event, noting that for a first edition, the participation was truly extraordinary, expressing his hope that this marks the beginning of a long-standing tradition.
With this inaugural edition, Marene joins the rich galaxy of Piedmontese carnivals, a region that boasts some of the most famous masquerade events in Italy. The Marene festival fits into a calendar of parades that, between February and March, brings dozens of towns in the Province of Cuneo to life, each with its own floats, masks, and gastronomic traditions linked to the Carnival season.
