Evening excursions among the fireflies in the Parco delle Gravine, Mottola
In the territory of Mottola, in the province of Taranto, lies the Bosco di Sant'Antuono, a vast area of ancient oaks, holm oaks, and downy oaks, Mediterranean scrub, and small natural canyons. Every year, during a brief window between late May and mid-June, this forest becomes the stage for one of the most poetic spectacles of the Apulian nature: the bioluminescence of fireflies. In the darkness of the undergrowth, thousands of these small lampyrid beetles light up in their courtship dance, creating the illusion of a starry sky that has descended to the ground.
The time window is very short: mating occurs only between approximately May 20th and June 20th, and it is precisely this reproductive instinct that triggers the light phenomenon. The Bosco di Sant'Antuono is an ideal habitat because it falls within the Terra delle Gravine Regional Natural Park and is protected as a Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area: a healthy, dark, and humid environment, which is an essential condition for the survival of fireflies.
Given the fragility of the ecosystem, access to the forest is regulated by the Municipality of Mottola: it is not a free-roaming walk, but a guided tour with limited capacity. Local associations and cooperatives, together with the Mottola Infopoint and in collaboration with WWF Trulli e Gravine, accompany small groups along the forest paths at sunset. The guides explain the summer ecosystem, the life of nocturnal animals, and the firefly cycle, while waiting for the darkness necessary to witness the spectacle.
To protect the fireflies, it is essential to minimize artificial light sources: it is recommended to follow the guides' instructions, avoid powerful flashlights and camera flashes, move in silence, and do not collect the insects. The charm of this experience lies in its simplicity: no scenery, no stage, just the forest, the darkness, and the living light of the fireflies. An appointment that combines environmental education, gentle hiking, and wonder, which has now become a small naturalistic tradition in the summer calendar of Mottola and the Taranto hinterland.
In 2026, firefly observation in the Bosco di Sant'Antuono in Mottola was governed by municipal ordinance no. 4 of May 14, 2026, which authorized access to the protected area between May 20 and June 20, 2026. As in previous years, entry was permitted only through guided and pre-booked evening excursions, organized by local operators under the coordination of the Mottola Infopoint.
Visits took place in limited evening time slots with restricted stay times, to ensure access for everyone without disturbing the habitat. The experience, also suitable for families with children, combined nature hiking with the discovery of the light phenomenon, one of the most evocative of the Apulian spring.
The Bosco di Sant'Antuono is located along the S.P. 53 Mottola–Martina Franca road, within the municipal territory of Mottola (TA). By car: from the SS100 Bari–Taranto highway, take the Mottola exit, then follow signs for Martina Franca. Nearest train station: Mottola (Bari–Taranto line), a few kilometers from the town center.
Access is limited and regulated by the Municipality of Mottola. Booking is mandatory through the Mottola Infopoint (tel. +39 099 8867640) or authorized operators organizing the evening excursions. It is advisable to book well in advance due to the limited availability of spots for each time slot.
Trekking or comfortable shoes, mosquito repellent, a flashlight (to be used only for walking and with moderation), and possibly something to eat while waiting for darkness. Clothing suitable for the cool evenings in the forest.
