Hot air balloons over the Terra delle Gravine
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Canyon Balloon Festival - A Breath of the Mediterranean is a traveling event dedicated to hot air balloons that traverses the Terra delle Gravine, in the heart of Puglia. Promoted by the Puglia Region and organized by the Consorzio Landing on South Italy, the festival visits different municipalities between the provinces of Taranto and Bari each year. Among the most evocative stops is Castellaneta, a town in the province of Taranto famous for being the birthplace of silent film star Rodolfo Valentino.
The festival was created with the goal of showcasing the wonders of the Apulian territory to international balloon pilots, who become ambassadors for the region across the Mediterranean and beyond. In Castellaneta, colorful hot air balloons rise above the spectacular ravines that descend toward the Ionian Sea, offering residents and visitors a unique view. Flights typically take place in the early morning and late afternoon, when wind conditions are most favorable.
Beyond the spectacle of the balloons, the Castellaneta stage offers tethered flights (with the balloon anchored to the ground) and, when possible, panoramic free flights, alongside a rich array of activities: street food featuring typical Apulian flavors, live music, workshops, and an area dedicated to children. The festival pays special attention to accessibility, with flights designed for people with sensory disabilities.
The Castellaneta stage is part of a broader journey connecting nature, culture, and taste, crossing the karst canyons, masserie (farmhouses), olive groves, and rock-hewn villages that characterize this corner of Puglia. Participating means discovering an authentic territory from an unprecedented perspective: the sky. Admission to the festival areas is traditionally free, making the event accessible to families, enthusiasts, and curious visitors alike.
The Canyon Balloon Festival is an autumn event that has enlivened the Municipality of Castellaneta and the entire Terra delle Gravine in recent years. Dates and programs change from edition to edition and are published on the official website and social media channels. It is always recommended to check flight times, which are subject to weather conditions.
The 2026 edition of the Canyon Balloon Festival has not yet been scheduled at the time of publication. In recent seasons, the traveling event has brought hot air balloons to the municipalities of the Terra delle Gravine in the autumn, with a stop in Castellaneta, in the province of Taranto. As soon as the organization announces the official dates and program, this page will be updated. We recommend checking the website canyonballoonfestival.com for definitive information.
