The pig festival of Villa Verucchio, heart of Romagna's gastronomic tradition
The Fira de Bagòin — whose name in the Romagnolo dialect literally means 'pig festival' — is the gastronomic event that annually celebrates the pig in Villa Verucchio, a hamlet in the Municipality of Verucchio, in the Province of Rimini, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Held in Piazza Europa, the festival transforms the town center for an entire weekend into a large open-air laboratory dedicated to cured pork products and Romagnolo folk traditions.
The idea for an event entirely dedicated to the pig was born decades ago in the shadow of the Rocca Malatestiana, long organized by the Pro Loco. After some editions in the main town, the festival later moved to Piazza Europa in Villa Verucchio, where its strategic location and favorable logistics have allowed it to attract thousands of visitors year after year. Although it doesn't boast ancient origins like other historical festivals in the Rimini area, the Fira de Bagòin has become deeply ingrained in the territory's identity, turning into one of the most anticipated events in the Valmarecchia.
The heart of the event is the live pork butchery demonstration: the processing of pork in front of the public, showcasing the step-by-step creation of salamis, sausages, cotechini, and chops according to traditional Romagnolo curing techniques. Alongside the demonstrations, food stands offer the best of local pork-based cuisine: from cured meats to grilled meats, including the famous pork rinds (ciccioli), the stars of a dedicated competition with a jury. There are also workshops for children, designed to introduce them to the raw ingredients.
The Fira de Bagòin is not just about food: concerts, folk music bands, and DJ sets liven up the evenings, along with dance school performances and radio entertainment. More recent additions include the Trekking de Bagòin, a hiking route through the hills of the Valmarecchia that combines sport, landscape, and conviviality. It's the typical formula for village festivals in Romagna, where good food, music, and social interaction merge into one grand community celebration.
Organized by GM Eventi with the patronage of the Municipality of Verucchio and the collaboration of the Pro Loco and local associations, the Fira de Bagòin attracts visitors from all over the province of Rimini and the Romagna hinterland. For those visiting Verucchio, the festival is also an opportunity to discover the Rocca Malatestiana, the historic village, and the Villanovan archaeological heritage at the Civic Museum, in a weekend that blends taste, culture, and tradition.
From February 6 to 8, 2026, in Piazza Europa in Villa Verucchio, the Fira de Bagòin returned after a six-year absence, achieving a success that, in the words of the organizers, "exceeded all optimistic expectations." Three intense days featured the live pork butchery of 25 quintals of meat, transformed into salamis, sausages, cotechini, and chops.
The program opened on Friday, February 6, at 8:00 PM with the "Cena de Bagòin" followed by a tribute to Vasco Rossi by the band Radio Kom. On Saturday, February 7, starting at 10:00 AM, the live pork butchery demonstration took place, at 3:30 PM the children's workshop "With Hands in the Meat," and in the evening, from 9:00 PM, Romagnolo folk music with Roberta Cappelletti, followed by a DJ set. Sunday, February 8, saw two absolute novelties: the pork rind competition with a jury at 9:00 AM and the Trekking de Bagòin at 9:30 AM, a 10 km route of medium difficulty with a 250-meter elevation gain. For lunch, live music with Filippo Malatesta, and in the afternoon, radio entertainment and dance school performances.
Record numbers for the comeback: approximately 8,000 visitors, over 3,000 meals served (dine-in and takeaway), 40 exhibitors, 250 participants in the trekking, and 60 volunteers from Pro Loco, GM Eventi, and Ci.Vi.Vo. Eventi.
