The feast of Saint John's Eve in the San Domenico district of Argenta
The Fira ad San Zvan is the festival that every year, at the end of June, brings the magical Saint John's Eve back to life in the heart of the Renaissance district of San Domenico, in Argenta, in the lower Ferrara area. The dialectal name refers precisely to San Zvan, Saint John the Baptist, whose feast day falls on June 24th, close to the summer solstice. The event takes place in the charming park between the churches of San Giovanni and San Domenico, in a corner of the city that preserves the memory of its Renaissance past.
The event is promoted by the Ecomuseo of Argenta and the Associazione Rione San Domenico, with the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region. The Fira is part of a broader project to enhance the knowledge and crafts of the territory: participatory workshops that revive gestures, knowledge, and traditions of the Argenta community, from artisanal practices to uses related to the land and the Valli.
In popular tradition, the vigil of Saint John is the night when herbs with particular beneficial and healing powers are collected: with them, the so-called Saint John's water is prepared, considered regenerating. To relive this custom, during the Fira, a guided tour of the Argenta Valli is offered with the support of an agronomist, who illustrates the local herbs and their uses, reconnecting the festival with the nature of the Po Delta Park.
Alongside the theme of herbs and the solstice, the Fira ad San Zvan offers the atmosphere of a typical Emilian-Romagnol village festival. Among the offerings that characterize the event:
Located in the plain between Ferrara and Ravenna, Argenta is a gateway to the Po Delta Regional Park and preserves a valuable natural heritage in its Valli, managed by the Ecomuseo. The Fira ad San Zvan represents one of the most heartfelt occasions to discover this corner of Emilia-Romagna, combining the spiritual and symbolic dimension of the Saint John's festival with the rediscovery of the landscape, knowledge, and conviviality of the Municipality of Argenta.
The 2026 edition of the Fira ad San Zvan takes place from Wednesday, June 24th to Friday, June 26th, 2026, in Argenta, province of Ferrara, in the park of the Renaissance district of San Domenico. The schedule revolves around Saint John's Eve on June 24th and the tradition of solstice herbs, with a guided tour of the Argenta Valli accompanied by an agronomist. The event is completed by food stalls featuring Argenta's traditions, demonstrations of ancient crafts, markets, and music and entertainment. The detailed program with times and events will be released by the Ecomuseo of Argenta and the Associazione Rione San Domenico in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times, gastronomic events, the guided tour of the Valli's herbs, and evening activities, will be published by the Ecomuseo of Argenta and the Associazione Rione San Domenico closer to the event.
