Ruda's summer festival, featuring fried frogs, ballroom dancing, and Friulian tradition
The Fieste dai Cros — literally «frog festival» in Friulian — is one of the most characteristic summer events in Ruda, a town in Bassa Friulana in the province of Udine. Combined for years with the Festa dell'Unità, it blends popular gastronomic tradition with the social and debate activities typical of village festivals, in a genuine mix of good food, music, and civic engagement.
The absolute star is fried frog, a signature dish of the Bassa Friulana cuisine linked to the area of rivers and springs. Alongside the frogs, the stalls offer the great traditional classics: frico, cevapcici, grilled meats, polenta, and fish dishes, all accompanied by wine and beer. Simple and abundant cuisine, to be enjoyed on long summer evenings.
The festival offers entertainment every evening: ballroom dancing nights with orchestras and group dances, open-air cinema, walks under the stars, and the unmissable raffles, with attractive prizes. Over the years, the event has also hosted significant concerts, such as that of the Modena City Ramblers, alongside spaces dedicated to cultural and political debate. An event that tells the convivial and solidarity spirit of Ruda and Bassa Friulana.
