Two days of music, games, and community in Piazza IV Novembre, Montemiletto
Fiesta - Why Stay is not just another local festival. Born in Montemiletto, a town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and Campania, the event focuses on the theme of youth depopulation in inland villages and attempts to flip the narrative: staying is not a sacrifice, but a choice of value, courage, and belonging. This is the common thread that ties together two days in June filled with music, games, sports, food, and public debate.
The organization is managed by the Pro Loco Mons Militum APS, with the patronage of the Municipality of Montemiletto and the collaboration of local associations. The headquarters is Piazza IV Novembre, which for the occasion becomes a large open-air lounge: stages, stands, play areas, and tables are spread across the square and the streets of the town center.
The formula is intentionally intergenerational. In the early afternoon, the children's area opens, featuring inflatables, musical games that blend rhythm and movement, painting workshops, and the highly anticipated bubble show. In parallel, tournaments for teenagers and adults come to life: tennis-soccer open to all ages, beer pong, and, among the most awaited moments, the Soap Box Race, the lighthearted race of cardboard carts along the town streets.
In the evening, the square changes its face. Dance schools, local bands, and DJs take turns on stage, with sets continuing well past midnight: in recent editions, the programming has extended until two in the morning. The choice is to give space primarily to artists and entities from Irpinia, consistent with the spirit of the event.
The institutional heart of Fiesta is the Sunday morning conference, hosted in the square and dedicated to the promotion, development, and revitalization of inland areas. Administrators, representatives of the Campania Region, UNPLI executives, GAL presidents, and youth associations sit around the table: an opportunity for public discussion that complements the festivities with a concrete reflection on services, work, and opportunities for those who choose to live in Irpinia. At the same venue, the Pro Loco presents awards to the town's businesses, both historic and newly established.
Food stands accompany both days: roasts, fried foods, desserts, draft beer, and soft drinks, with popular prices and table service in the square. In some editions, a collective Sunday lunch has also been organized by reservation, one of the most identity-defining moments of the event, as it literally brings the whole town to the same table.
Montemiletto is located a few kilometers from Avellino and the highway exit, in an area known for the vineyards of Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, and dominated by the Castello Della Leonessa. Those who arrive in June find a village that does not just stage its tradition, but openly discusses its future. Admission is free, the atmosphere is familiar, and pets are welcome: it is one of the most genuine festivals in inland Irpinia, where the tourist is welcomed as part of the community rather than as a spectator.
With the 2026 edition, "Fiesta - Why Stay" confirmed its formula: two full days, a single square, and a program designed for children, youth, and adults to gather in the same spaces. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Mons Militum APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Montemiletto, opened on Saturday, June 20, and concluded on the night between Sunday and Monday.
Alongside the fun, the moment of public reflection returned: the Sunday morning conference in the square on inland areas, featuring administrators and representatives of the Irpinian associative world, followed by the presentation of Pro Loco awards to local businesses.
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit Avellino Est or Benevento, then SS7 Appia towards Montemiletto (about 20 km from Avellino). By train: Avellino or Benevento station, then local bus or taxi. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about 70 km away.
Piazza IV Novembre and the streets of the center of Montemiletto (AV). The area is pedestrianized during the event; parking is available in the surrounding streets.
Free entry to all activities. Food stands are paid with popular prices. Registration or booking via the Pro Loco is required for tournaments and the potential lunch in the square.
Open-air evening event: bring a light sweater, as June evenings in Irpinia are cool. Pet-friendly event. For accommodation, there are farmhouses and B&Bs in the Greco di Tufo area and facilities in Avellino.
