Dossena and livestock tradition

In the heart of Val Brembana, the Municipality of Dossena (Province of Bergamo) preserves one of the most deep-rooted traditions of the Orobie Alpine arc: the breeding of brown cattle. Every autumn, this vocation translates into a large livestock fair, a moment of celebration and comparison for local breeders.

The brown cattle show

The day takes place at the Davide Astori Sports Field and revolves around the cattle show. From early morning, the jury is at work, evaluating the animals presented by the breeders; the presentation of the animals and the awards punctuate the day. The cow judged best wins access to the final of the Regina e Reginetta delle Valli (Queen and Little Queen of the Valleys), the competition that at the end of October, in Camerata Cornello, brings together the most beautiful animals from the various local fairs. It is no coincidence that winning animals of the title of Queen of the Bergamo Valleys have come precisely from Dossena.

A community celebration

Organized by the Municipality of Dossena with the contribution of a group of young breeders under 30, the fair is much more than a technical exhibition: it is a village festival that celebrates the bond between the community, its mountain pastures, and the work of those who still carry on mountain farming today. The event is part of the rich calendar of cattle shows that, from August to October, liven up the Bergamo valleys.
