The transhumance fair in the highest municipality of Umbria
The Fiera di San Felice, also known as the transhumance fair, is an ancient fair for livestock and goods that renews a centuries-old tradition in Monteleone di Spoleto. Once, in the fields in front of the village, a large market for livestock and agricultural products was held, where animals and goods were bartered: today the fair keeps its memory alive, enhancing the link with sheep farming and transhumance.
The livestock and cereal market exhibition is the heart of the event, accompanied by the presentation of the area's Slow Food presidia (such as Ricotta Salata della Valnerina and Fagiolo secondo del Piano di Orvieto) and the renowned Farro DOP of Monteleone, the only cereal with DOP certification in Europe. There are also tastings of local products, honey, and cheeses from the Valnerina.
The program includes equestrian shows and activities, with pony and mule experiences, saddle baptisms, carriage rides, and horseback riding for children, adults, and people with disabilities. To complete the festival, there are excursions, trekking, mountain biking, and concerts, in a unique mountain setting in the highest municipality of Umbria, in the province of Perugia.
In 2026, Monteleone di Spoleto is preparing once again to renew the ancient Fiera di San Felice, traditionally held in July. The event is expected to feature the livestock and cereal market exhibition, equestrian shows and activities, the presentation of Slow Food presidia and Farro DOP, as well as tastings of typical Valnerina products.
The exact dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. For updates, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Monteleone di Spoleto.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. The fair typically follows a two-day weekend structure: livestock and cereal market exhibition; presentation of Slow Food presidia (Ricotta Salata della Valnerina, Fagiolo secondo del Piano di Orvieto, Buckwheat) and Farro DOP; equestrian shows and activities with ponies and mules for children, adults, and people with disabilities; tastings of typical products, excursions, and concerts. Dates and schedule will be announced by the organizers.
Monteleone di Spoleto is located in the upper Valnerina, in the province of Perugia, at an altitude of about one thousand meters. By car: from the SS3 Flaminia or the E45 towards Spoleto-Norcia, then local roads towards Cascia and Monteleone.
In July, generally on the weekend around the feast day of San Felice.
Due to the mountain climate, wear layered clothing even in summer; it's an excellent opportunity to taste and buy Farro DOP and typical products from the Valnerina.
