Concerts, conferences, and art on the grand 18th-century European era, from Udine to Friuli Venezia Giulia
The Festival of Tiepolo and the 18th Century in Europe is a cultural and musical event dedicated to the great 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment, and the figure of Giambattista Tiepolo, the famous Venetian painter who created some of his most extraordinary frescoes in Udine, from the Patriarchal Palace to the Cathedral. Organized by the association Itineraria under the artistic direction of Maria Paola Frattolin, the festival takes place in March, the month of the master's birth and death.
The program intertwines concerts of Baroque and classical music, art history conferences, meetings, costume workshops, and food and wine events. Alongside Tiepolo, the festival celebrates the great protagonists of the 18th century in Europe: from composers Vivaldi, Tartini, and Mozart to the artists who animated the courts and villas of the time. A journey that unites different arts to capture the spirit of an era of light and progress.
While Udine is its heart, the event extends throughout Friuli Venezia Giulia, reaching Trieste, Gorizia, and Pordenone, in churches, historic palaces, and 18th-century villas. The prestigious venues—from Udine Castle to Palazzo Antonini Belgrado, as well as cathedrals—provide the ideal backdrop for a high-profile program. Supported by regional institutions, the festival is a valuable event for lovers of ancient music and art history.
Celebrating Tiepolo in Udine means rediscovering the deep connection between the city and one of the greatest European artists of all time. The festival invites the public to look at the 18th century with new eyes, amidst masterpieces of painting, live music, and historical reflections, in a constant dialogue between past and present. With free admission to all events, it is a festival open to everyone.
The 6th edition of the Festival of Tiepolo and the 18th Century in Europe opens on March 5, 2026, with an inaugural concert at Udine Castle entrusted to the Tartini Conservatory String Orchestra. This year's motto, "Sapere aude!" ("Dare to know!"), evokes the 18th century as an age of light and progress.
The festival celebrates Giambattista Tiepolo alongside composers Vivaldi, Tartini, and Mozart—whose 270th birth anniversary is being commemorated—and artists such as Dorigny, Torretti, and Novelli. The program intertwines concerts, art history conferences, costume workshops, and food and wine events, with Udine as the hub and stops in Trieste, Gorizia, and Pordenone. All events are free to attend.
