About Three Saints Festival

Every May 10th, San Fratello, an ancient Gallo-Italic village in the Nebrodi mountains near Messina, celebrates its three patron saints: Alfio, Filadelfio, and Cirino. The heart of the festival is the evocative horseback procession, where dozens of riders escort the flower-adorned statue of Saint Filadelfio and the reliquary urn from the Mother Church to the Sanctuary of the Three Saints on Monte Vecchio. Religious tradition, popular devotion, and equestrian folklore merge in one of the most distinctive patronal festivals in the Messina area.

A patronal festival blending faith and folklore

The Festival of the Three Holy Martyrs is the most cherished event of the year in San Fratello, a picturesque village perched in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. Every May 10th, the community pays homage to its three patron saints—the martyr brothers Alfio, Filadelfio, and Cirino—with a celebration that unites deep religious devotion and a unique style of equestrian folklore found nowhere else in Sicily.

The horseback procession to Monte Vecchio

The highlight of the festival is the horseback procession, which begins early in the morning with the participation of dozens of riders. The flower-adorned statue of Saint Filadelfio, along with the reliquary urn, is carried in procession from the Mother Church to the Sanctuary of the Three Saints, which stands on Monte Vecchio overlooking the town. The parade of horses and riders, a custom introduced in the last century, devoutly accompanies the patron saints along the ascent to the mountain.

One of the most thrilling moments occurs on the stretch of road between the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Sanctuary: here, the riders shift from a slow trot to a sweeping gallop, creating an intense scene that draws worshippers and visitors every year.

Triduum, Vespers, and celebrations

The festival opens a few days before May 10th with a solemn preparatory triduum and the singing of Solemn Vespers, while the eve is marked by a suggestive candlelight procession that carries the relics through the streets of the town. Upon reaching the Sanctuary, the statue is the centerpiece of the solemn Holy Mass, followed by the conviviality of a community lunch on the mountain; later, the statue returns to the Mother Church, while riders and the faithful continue their day of celebration.

Traditional music

The processions are accompanied by the notes of the San Benedetto il Moro band and, after an absence of about thirty years, the return of the Fanfara dei Giudei di San Fratello, an ancient musical ensemble linked to local Holy Week traditions. The evenings of the festivities conclude in the town center, in Piazza Ricca Salerno, with music and entertainment.

San Fratello, a Gallo-Italic village of the Nebrodi

The festival must be understood within the unique context of San Fratello, one of the Gallo-Italic villages of Sicily: here, the Sanfratellano dialect—of Lombard origin—is still preserved, testifying to the medieval settlement of northern colonists. The bond with the Sanfratellano horse, an indigenous breed raised in the Nebrodi, provides the natural backdrop for the cavalcade in honor of the three saints, making this patronal festival an authentic expression of the municipality's identity.

Three Saints Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Three Saints Festival was celebrated in San Fratello on Sunday, May 10th, preceded by the preparatory triduum and Solemn Vespers. The horseback procession accompanied the statue of Saint Filadelfio from the Mother Church to the Sanctuary on Monte Vecchio. Among the novelties was the return of the Fanfara dei Giudei after about thirty years.

The 2026 edition of the Festival of the Three Holy Martyrs of San Fratello reached its peak on Sunday, May 10, 2026, preceded by the solemn preparatory triduum from May 7th to 9th. All the traditional elements of the patronal festival of the Nebrodi village were confirmed.
